Antipop is an album by Primus, released on October 19, 1999. The title comes from an apparent dislike of disposable pop music.
The album was received with generally mixed reaction from fans and critics. The majority of Primus fans seem to have found the album satisfactory, sort of a "return to form" from their previous album, The Brown Album, which was generally disliked by fans. A few fans, however, felt that the album featured too much contribution from outside musicians, uncomfortable at the change in sound, but overall the album was positively received. Supporters of the album argue that it shows the band members returning to their original styles, and that Bryan Mantia plays more in sync with the band on this album (many people thought he sounded very sloppy on the Brown Album).
Stylistically it evokes early Primus records in its metal influence, like their 1990 studio debut Frizzle Fry; this time around, however, the metal revolved less around thrash and more around nu metal, with its heavy guitar attacks and somewhat simplistic style. This may be an influence from touring with bands such as Limp Bizkit and Korn, who themselves claim to be influenced by Primus.
The album features several well-known guest musicians and producers, including James Hetfield of Metallica, Jim Martin of Faith No More, Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.
