Talk:Gonarch
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Very pleased that someone took the time to check on my "theory". I thought that no one would take it seriously, as testicles are mentioned... Great job on the new article, however there are a few gramatical errors, mainly involving punctuation. Not a big deal, but I may get a user name, then edit the article. Again, great job. 204.210.235.150 02:19, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Has anyone else heard it postulated that "Gonarch" is a portmaneau of "gonad" and "monarch"? I wouldn't add it to article obviously, because I've only heard it called that by a few friends... However, if anyone has better sources for the word, they may want to add them. 24.166.237.192 02:40, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
A side note, which is not worth actually inserting into the article: Obviously the Gonarch was not the literal "mother of all headcrabs", since they appear plentifully in Half-Life 2 (including previously unseen breeds). Unless, of course, someone has been collecting and cross-breeding them... -DynSkeet (talk) 12:57, May 16, 2005 (UTC)
- If the Combine can make giant skyscrapers fall out of the sky, they can probably produce headcrabs in laboratories. CABAL 17:07, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

- Actually, in a model in the game (don't know exactly how to access it, it's in the article now) there's a severed part of a Gonarch sac, which would probably explain why the Combine can create so many headcrabs. bob rulz 12:52, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Revamping
Assuming no one has a problem with this, Im going to redo this article mostly. I own a copy of HL2: Raising the Bar and will be able to add some more information, as well as adding some other information missing and making the article look nicer.--Azslande 05:22, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re-Done
Well Iv redone the entire page almost, I saved a lot of information from the pervious page and just re-worded it, added some new facts, fixed some spelling and naming errors, yadda yadda... Look good? Might need some minor tweaking but i think it likes nice...--Azslande 17:48, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I did a little work and found the numbers on the articles expantion.
It started at 324 words, 1995 char's. I expanded it to 926 words, 5216 char's. Thats not counting the table, reference, or titles. --Azslande 20:22, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hmmmm. Not convinced myself. Seems like a lot of original research to me, but I've not read Raising The Bar, so can't be sure. Anyone else who's read that care to comment? The text a week or so ago pretty much covered things with far less text (less is sometimes more; and usually so when it comes to the WP). This all feels a bit fancrufty now. Cheers, --Plumbago 20:03, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

- Raising the Bar offers little extra information on Gonarchs. There's a concept sketch with a few facts written in it, and two quotes from Backman and Gabe Newell aside that. Otherwise, nothing really. The article as it is now looks okay, if not needlessly expanded in some areas. Not sure if I favor some of the changed wording, however. Tnx... Im not much for writing, so take appon yourselves to edit, I mostly wanted to expand the article with facts because it seemed under writen. Since a gonarch is the last stage of a headcrabs life, I thought it fit to expand the article using various resources, this mostly because of headcrabs have taken such a major role in the HL series. So Feel free to re-write the article to read better, and add what ya see fit... Infact I encourage ya'll to. If ya have a question about the article facts themselves, ask me here, I will be glad to answer.--Azslande 04:47, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Capitalized?
Shouldn't all instances of the name be capitalized as "Gonarch"? I know its a species name, but its similar to the name of Vortigaunt species, and "Vortigaunt" is always capitalized regardless. I've never seen the name Gonarch not capitalized, whether it was referring to Big Momma or the species in general. MarphyBlack 10:14, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
This is a bit of a tuff one. If I remember correctly in english it should not be capitalized. We dont capitalize the word "dog" or "human". I would think it should not be, even though it is a fictional sppecies.--Azslande 23:01, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Big Momma Vs Big Mama
While most of the communities call the Gonarch "Big Momma" all instances of spelling in the Raising the Bar book are "Big Mama". What do you guys think? I mean, when I edited it in I changed what had been "Big Momma" to "Big Mama" since thats how the book spells it.--Azslande 23:01, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- Raising the Bar is the first ever instance of the Gonarch being referred to as Big "Mama". Before this, the model name and the all internal references found in the game code referred to the creature as Big "Momma" (i.e.
monster_bigmomma
is its entity name). Also, the sprite names for its range attacks aremommaspit.spr
,mommaspout.spr
, andmommablob.spr
. MarphyBlack 23:08, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Very good point... Yea, I have no argument for keeping it "Momma", so assuming no one else wants to chime in, I see no reason to change it around.--Azslande 01:48, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
