[edit] Infobox for German cities, towns and municipalities

New infobox that combines features of de:Vorlage:Infobox Ort in Deutschland and Template:Infobox City, plus a few extra things.

[edit] Important Features

Since de:Vorlage:Infobox Ort in Deutschland is being introduced to many German locations in the German Wikipedia, the variable fields here use the same names to make it easier for editors to import infobox information from the German Wikipedia to the English one.
For many fields, German values can be given (i.e. without translation to English) and will be displayed in English.

• eg. By entering "Bundesland = Bayern", the infobox will display "State: Bavaria"

The variables with English names relate to features that do not exist in Infobox Ort in Deutschland.

Major new features, compared to Template:Infobox Town DE:

• No longer need a location map for each entry. By entering the geographical co-ordinates, a map is automatically displayed.
• Population density automatically calculated upon entry of population and area
• Area, population density and elevation automatically displayed in both metric and imperial units
• Auto-categorisation of entries, depending on values entered
• Optional 2nd map, to display location in more detail.

Major new features, compared to de:Vorlage:Infobox Ort in Deutschland:

• Can give year of city foundation: places article in "Category: xxxx establishments"
• Can display representative photo of location (a feature of Infobox Town DE, which, for some reason, was never used) (eg. see Cologne)
• In addition to displaying the political party of the mayor/lord mayor/etc., it is also possible to display the ruling parties. Currently, a coalition of up to 3 parties is supported - if more are needed, please report it on the template talk page) (eg. see Braunschweig)

Just importing everything from the German wiki "as is" will be fine for most fields, but some things will always need a bit of extra user input:

• The translation of some text fields that could never be automated (eg. Gliederung and Lageplanbeschreibung).
• The mayor entry is normally wikilinked on the German wiki entries - that should be undone. The template checks automatically for the presence of an entry with that name.
• One should also look out for any unusual wikilinking in the Partei field, particularly if a minor party is used.
• The extra information from Infobox Town DE should also be preserved: notably the source URL for the population ata (the wikilinking from this URL should be removed)
• Add a representative photo of the location, if possible. If there is a good picture for this, it will probably be already on the page somewhere.
• Many entries on the German entry give a range of values for elevation. Ranges cannot be converted to imperial units. To prevent error messages, make sure that the dash used between the highest and lowest value is a minus sign, not a dash.
• When/if the auto-categorisation works, the manual "Cities/Towns... in ..." categories at the bottom of the page should be deleted. This way, any false categorisations that are currently in place will be undone and corrected by the infobox.
• It is planned that this template be also used for city/town subdivisions (suburbs, burroughs, etc.) but this feature is in a very early stage. Use with caution and report and problems/suggestions to the template talk page.

This template is still under development. Please do not start wide-spread implementation of this infobox: there are still a few important issues that need to taken care of first. Instead, feel free to test it on various entries and report any problems on the Talk page
