Jaswal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jaswal is a Rajput surname found predominantly in Northern India and Pakistan.
The etymological origins of the word Jaswal can be traced back to the Kingdom of Jaswan that was founded around 1170 CE in present day Himachal Pradesh. The River Swaan runs through the Una District and forms a valley in the Siwalik Range...this formed the core of the Kingdom.
Religion wise, Jaswals are primarily Hindu but can also be Sikh if they are from India and Muslim if they are from Pakistan.
[edit] Geneaology
The Jaswal Rajputs are a branch of the famous Katoch clan of Kangra. Their first ancestor Raja Purab Chand was a younger brother of the then Raja of Kangra...he carved out an independent kingdom in the Swaan valley, which came to be know as Jaswan. His descendants were hence known as Jaswal Rajputs.
The present head of the clan is Raja Chain Singh (since 1945) who lives in his ancestral palace at Amb (Una District).
