From May 15-17, I cleaned most of the Images for deletion backlog -- 10+ days worth. While I was glad to do this, it isn't something I normally do for my days of contributing content are far and few in between, as I am on vandal patrol of porn-related articles. However, in doing backlog cleanup, I've come to a few conclusions:
- When nominating images for deletion notify the uploader. This is one of those things that should be done regardless of whether or not the uploader has been identified as a vandal, or if the images were used in an article that was speedied.
- To further my point, just because you notify a person that one of their imaegs is listed for deletion does not mean you can tag the rest of a user's image contributions and not notify the uploader that all the others are also on IFD. Thus, for every image listed for deletion, notify the user of each and every image, regardless of whether or not you are filling up his or her talk page. Got it?
- People really need to get sensible with the names of the files. Stat. The upload file page has the ability to re-name files, so that they can be human readable. For instance, Image:123fu456bar9857.jpg tells no one anything about the image. Common sense dictates that image names should be:
- Succinct and to the point. Therefore an image of the TARDIS should be called Image:TARDIS.jpg, and neither long, boisterious names such as Image:Time and Relative Dimensions in Space.jpg or Image:Time and Relative Dimensions in Space stationary on London, near Big Ben on Earth, which is the third planet from the sun and contains a species called Humans, of which the Time Lord known as "The Doctor" is presently saving the world from.jpg.
- If the image is the only one of its kind, then adding numbers after it doesn't do anything. Image names such as Image:Hillary Scott DSC 0250.JPG are, sensiblly, irritating because while I know who it is (Hillary Scott), the "DSC 0250" means nothing to anyone. Nada. Zilch. Nil. Also, for people who want to add this image to the proper article, this makes just harder to do.
