Kor (Qor in Klingon) is a character from the fictional Star Trek universe. He was the first Klingon to be shown on television, played by John Colicos (first appearing in "Errand of Mercy"), and one of three original series Klingons to also appear on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
[edit] Overview
In 2267, when war broke out with the Federation, Kor occupied the neutral planet of Organia. He served as military governor over the pacifist population at the same time as Federation officers Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock were on the planet. The two resisted the Klingon occupation, but were captured and forced to escape. Kirk and Spock confronted Kor just as the Federation and Klingon Fleets were about to take part in a battle. The Organians stopped the fighting before it could start by making all instruments on both sides red hot. The Organians revealed themselves as beings of pure energy (rather than the humanoids they had initially appeared as) and forced the Federation and Klingons to sign what became known as the Organian Peace Treaty. Kirk and especially Kor were upset with the race's interference, but complied.
Kor would next appear in the animated series episode "The Time Trap" as Captain of the IKS Klothos, in which he engaged Captain Kirk in battle. The two were forced to work together in order to escape from Delta Triangle region of space. As the canonical status of the series is questionable, Kor's appearance in the animated series has not been established as part of the official history of the character (although Kor did mention the Klothos in a DS9 episode).
Kor is a dahar master. When his firstborn was killed by a genetic virus unleashed by an Albino Klingon, along with the firstborns of Kang and Koloth, they swore a blood oath with Curzon Dax to exact revenge on the Albino. They carried the oath out with Jadzia Dax in 2370 (Blood Oath). In 2372, Kor, Dax, and Worf journeyed to the Gamma Quadrant in search of the legendary Sword of Kahless. The trio found the sword, but Kor and Worf realized that if the sword was reintroduced to Klingon society, it would cause division rather than unity. The sword was later beamed into space. Kor said of the trio's discovery, "It was our destiny to find it, but not our destiny to keep it."
The episode Once More Unto the Breach (set in the year 2375) depicted Kor as a hero to the Klingon Empire. As third officer aboard a Klingon vessel commanded by General Martok, Kor seemed to rise to the occasion by seizing command when Martok and first officer Worf were injured in a Dominion attack. However, in mid-battle, the senile Kor had a flashback to a battle with the Federation, and as a result of his momentary break with reality, his reputation was instantly ruined, as Martok and other Klingons began to mock him ruthlessly.
To prevent the Jem'Hadar from destroying all four remaining Birds of Prey before they could reach Sisko's re-enforcement squadron, Worf agreed to command one of the ships in a suicide attack on the pursuing Jem Hadar fleet. However, Kor tricked Worf and took his place as commander of the attack, the success of which disabled the Jem'Hadar just long enough for the rest of the Klingon fleet to avoid a battle in which they may have been somewhat outgunned. Thus, Kor redeemed his reputation and died gloriously, as a warrior, a prerequisite for Klingons to enter Sto-Vo-Kor. To honor his self-sacrifice, the crews of the remaining ships sang the Warrior's Anthem to show their devotion.
On that episode it was not clear if Kor did die; Worf was monitoring Kor's ship as they fell beyond sensor range. His death was left as a logical assumption. As John Colicos had died on March 6, 2000, it is unlikely that Kor would make any further appearances in a Star Trek related movie or television series.
[edit] Trivia

- The producers of Star Trek originally intended for Kor to return in the episode Day of the Dove, however actor John Colicos was not available at the time. As a result, a new Klingon character named Kang was created for this episode.
Kor, like many other Klingons, recovered at some point from the Metagenic virus, thereby regaining the ridges on his forehead and the hostile, brutish personality traits formerly possessed by the Klingon race prior to the virus's inception.
