Love Equals Death is a punk rock band from Petaluma, California formed on Halloween, 2003. The band was formed by bassist Dominic Davi after his controversial departure from his band Tsunami Bomb, along with vocalist Chon Travis (best known for his previous band Loose Change which he had founded along with Jade Puget who himself went on to join AFI) and two members from the band 26 MPH; Tonio Garcia-Romero and John Rosser. The name Love Equals Death was suggested by Dominic Davi and is said to be a reference to the band member's love of music and the sad fate of their former bands.
Shortly after releasing the bands debut CD EP, 4 Notes On A Dying Scale in early 2004 on PopSmear Records, guitarist John Rosser left the band to form The Helletons. Justin Levine aka Duffs who previously played with Eye Defy and had met Love Equals Death while recording their demos and live shows, took over duties as lead guitarist.
Love Equals Death caught the attention of Fat mike when a good friend of the band, Cripled Dave, who was also a friend of Fat Mike's sent him one of Love Equals Deaths C.D.S
Love Equals Death toured extensively across the United States and released a second CD EP on PopSmear Records in late 2005 entitled, The Hucklebuck EP which was a collection of favorites from their live show as well as releasing a Japanese only full length collection combining unreleased demos and the songs from 4 Notes On A Dying Scale titled The Prelude on Monkey Trick Records based in Tokyo, Japan.
On August 16, 2006, the United Kingdom newspaper The Daily Mail ran a controversial article titled "EMO Cult Warning For Parents" written by Sarah Sands warning of the rise of an "Emo Cult" in Europe. The article listed warning signs for parents and included Love Equals Death as one of the bands who are popular among the cult's members, and a part of a genre of music called Death Pop which was "popular in Germany" in which she placed partial blame for the rise of children intentionally harming themselves.
Kerrang!, a weekly rock magazine published in the United Kingdom ran a response article in their September 16, 2006 issue (issue # 1125) debunking the article in The Daily Mail, and included an interview with Love Equals Death bassist Dominic Davi who claimed Death Pop was a "fictitious genre" and denied any connection between them or any other musical group mentioned in the The Daily Mail's article, to a cult or the act of self-harm.
In January 2007, Love Equals Death announced that they would be releasing a split CD with Death By Stereo on the label Re-Ignition Records in late Spring or early Summer of the same year. The CD would include 3 songs by each band; two new songs and one cover song.
