Maryland Route 144 consists of six former sections of US 40 in several counties of the state of Maryland. Like its counterpart, MD 7, MD 144 exists in many different pieces throughout western and central Maryland, occasionally serving as a useful local route that complements Interstate 70 and US 40.
Other abandoned portions of U.S. 40 in the state of Maryland are signed as either Alternate U.S. 40 or Scenic U.S. 40.

MD 144 exists in multiple segments, six of which are known to be signed as MD 144. Each segment is listed by county with a separate junction list.

The westernmost segment, designated as MD 144, starts as Naves Cross Road near the Cumberland city limit and becomes Ali Ghan Rd, then Baltimore National Pike, after crossing I-68. It ends at Fifteen Mile Creek Rd. near the Washington County line. This segment is the longest intact state-maintained segment of the original route of U.S. 40.

The third segment, designated as MD 144WB, exits off I-68 near Hancock (Washington County). It is Western Pike at first and then becomes Main Street in Hancock. It serves the C&O Canal National Historic Park visitor center, just outside the town limits.

The fourth segment, designated MD 144WA, branches off U.S. 40 as Washington Street near Cedar Lawn. It retains this name as it terminates at the Hagerstown city limit.

[edit] Frederick
The fifth segment, designated MD 144FA, starts out as Patrick Street in Frederick. In downtown Frederick the route is split between Patrick and South streets, with Patrick Street running westbound and South Street running eastbound (the South Street alignment is signage only; MD 144FA follows Patrick St only). After crossing Interstate 70 at Exit 56 it runs alongside an abandoned alignment of U.S. 40 and crosses the Monocacy River. Beyond the river the route divides into a four-lane expressway reminiscent of U.S. 40 before its upgrade into I-70, and ends at a partial junction with I-70 at Exit 59.
Note that MDOT SHA's route logs for MD 144FA begin at I-70 Exit 59 and continues west into Frederick, running in the opposite direction to the route's cardinal signage.

A connection is available to the original route, now county-maintained, which continues as Old National Pike until it reaches the town limits of New Market. Within town the route becomes Main Street and resumes state maintenance, designated as MD 144FB. The sixth segment ends at MD 75, while the road itself becomes Old National Pike and then Ridgeville Boulevard, where it ends near Mount Airy.

[edit] Frederick-Carroll-Howard
The seventh segment, designated MD 144A, begins at MD 27 near Mount Airy (as Frederick Road). It generally parallels I-70 to the south, crossing every major route that also junctions with I-70. It rapidly passes through Carroll County, enters Howard County and continues until it ends at U.S. 40 at the far western edge of Ellicott City. This segment is the second longest intact state-maintained segment of the original route of U.S. 40.

[edit] Howard-Baltimore
Frederick Road begins less than a mile from where the previous section ends and parallels U.S. 40 through western Ellicott City. After crossing under US 29 with no access, Frederick Road travels through historic downtown Ellicott City (where it's known as Main Street) and eventually reaches the county line (at the Patapsco River). This segment, like some segments in Frederick County, is not state-maintained, but it does form part of the continuous route and is contiguous with the segment below.
[edit] Baltimore-Baltimore City
The route resumes state maintenance at the Howard County-Baltimore County line; the eighth segment, designated MD 144 (note the lack of suffix) continues through Oella and Catonsville in Baltimore County (crossing the Baltimore Beltway, I-695) before going into Baltimore City, where it becomes Frederick Avenue and ends at US 1 in downtown Baltimore.

The original MD 144 was once part of today's MD 146, near Loch Raven Reservoir in Baltimore County. In the 1930s, there was a 'break' in state maintenance; the northern segment was and is designated MD 146, but the southern segment, known today as Dulaney Valley Road between the reservoir and Towson, was MD 144. However, after the missing section was brought under state maintenance, the entire route became MD 146. During this period, most of today's segments of MD 144 were still part of US 40.
