Nate James is a British soul singer / songwriter who released his debut album, Set The Tone, in 2005. He was born on September 15, 1979 on the US military base at Lakenheath to an American father and British mother. His debut album, heavily influenced by soul artists such as Marvin Gaye, Prince and Stevie Wonder, won James widespread critical acclaim and two MOBO nominations for Best Newcomer and Best R&B Artist. The album, penned almost entirely by James, spans a wide variety of music styles, from the bassy R&B of "Set The Tone" and the upbeat pop of "Universal" to classic ballad "Justify Me" and the rocky influences in "I'll Decline" - a duet with Dawn Robinson of En Vogue.
As a recognised songwriter, he was signed by Universal Publishing in 2004 prior to him releasing any material as a performer. Nate has worked with several noted co-writers, including Eg White (Will Young's Leave Right Now) on "Universal", David Sneddon, Peter-John Vettese (Annie Lennox' Walking On Broken Glass) and Jamie Hartman (Will Young's All Time Love) on "Justify Me". A Second album is slated for release in spring 2007, featuring tracks henceforth only performed live, such as "Outta My Head". He has sold out numerous live shows at the Jazz Café in London and at other venues across the UK. His headline gig at Shepherds Bush Empire had to be rescheduled due to the 7 July 2005 London bombings but went ahead in October 2005. Nate and his band also performed at Fruitstock 2005. He has travelled abroad, finding great success in many European countries (winning Festivalbar 2006 in Italy) and Japan in particular.
Unlike many young artists he did not sign away the copyright in his recordings in the fast pursuit of fame. He owns his own music videos, does his own A&R and releases on his own Frofunk imprint via various deals with independent labels around the world.
