Newtown High School (Connecticut)

Newtown High School is a public school in Newtown, Connecticut. This school currently serves about 1,710 9-12 grade students, as of 2005. Newtown High is accredited, and was awarded the Blue Ribbon Award for schools of excellence in 2000.[1][2]

NHS offers numerous AP-level courses and language studies in French, Spanish, Italian, and Latin. Additional electives can be studied through band, orchestra, chorus, art, and technology coursework.

The school offers a wide range of sports, including football, soccer, baseball, softball, track and field, field hockey and others.
The Boys and Girls Soccer teams both won state titles in 2004. The Boys cross country team were the 2005 State Open champions. The Girls cross country team has been league Champions for 5 consecutive seasons (2002 through 2006). The Girls Swim team is currently in their third undefeated season, and recently placed first in their SWC championships. The Girl's track team has also completed their 4th undefeated season.
The school marching band, the Newtown High School Marching Nighthawks, went undefeated in their 2005-2006 season, and also captured the Musical Arts Conference Class XI championship, the USSBA CT State Class XI champoinship, and placed third in the USSBA PA State Class XI compition. The band's color guard was ranked #1 overall in this competition.[3]
The school mascot is the nighthawk; the school teams have the same name. The mascot and team names where changed from the "Indians" in 1996, amidst controversy about the racist nature of the mascot.

Newtown High School has a few well-known alumni; the most well known being runner Bruce Jenner, winner of an olympic gold metal in track and field. Jenner lived in Newtown for a short period of time and did not acknowledge the school after they named the field and stadium after him. The stadium and fields were subsequently renamed "Blue and Gold Stadium" after the school's official colors.
[edit] Renovations
In 1997 the school went under a major reconstruction, including the addition of a 250,000 square foot addition to the eastern side of the school. A new track and football field were also constructed, and extra seating was installed in the stadium. The reconstruction was complete by January of 1998 and the school fully re-opened. In 2004, the athletic fields behind the school underwent major reconstruction. The entire area was leveled, and new baseball, softball, soccer and football fields were built.
The school also boasts the largest auditorium of any school in the state, with a seating capacity of over 1200 persons.
