[edit] My thesis

I wrote this thesis, I thought I'd post and see how you all liked it. I included a bibliography so no one gets left out.

[edit] Obesity Thesis

We are fat. And we are getting fatter. Twenty- five percent of all Americans today are classified as obese. Even worse, between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. What is causing this national epidemic, and what can we do to stop it? The first step is a healthy diet. So many Americans have fallen into a pattern known as snacking. The television is turned on, and with chips in hand, the obese American eats without paying any attention to what he or she is doing. And this cycle continues. They get fatter and fatter without realizing it until it comes to a poignant point; morbid obesity. Morbid obesity occurs when ones BMI exceeds 40. BMI stands for body mass index. Your body mass index is a number calculated by your height and weight. Once morbid obesity is reached, all hope seems lost. But do not fear! Hope is in sight. There is a way to stop this vicious cycle. It is called exercise, or in the case of morbid obesity, a lack thereof. If we can get children off the couch and away from the television, this will never happen. But with parents out of the house and not real incentive other that not being fat, it is nearly impossible to get them outside. But there is one venue that the kids cannot avoid; schools. Schools are really the only places where children can be forced to do something that they really don’t want to do, but need to do. In this case exercise. Physical activity should be required in schools from grades kindergarten to twelve for at least 1 hour per day, every day. There are many benefits of exercise. The most obvious one is weight control. Being overweight can lead to hypertension, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes. (Knowledge 2) Many obese people try to “diet” or reduce or control food intake to lose weight. This does not work. In fact, many times during dieting, the weight lost is muscle tissue, not body fat. This makes it difficult to lose weight, since muscle tissue is necessary for calorie burning. (Knowledge 1). Physical Activity also helps prevent a terrible disease called cancer. Obesity and physical inactivity may account for 25 to 30 percent of several major cancers-colon, breast, kidney, and cancer of the esophagus. (NCI 4) "Even moderate amounts of exercise may fight cancer on several different fronts." Says Dr. Edward Givannucci. On this basis alone children should be required to get exercise. A chance of avoiding cancer? Yes it is. But is it reason enough? Moving on… Obesity is also a contributing factor to the aging process. Exercise is an effective age retardant. Age comes with such obstacles as brittle bones, little muscle tissue, and a less efficient heart. Studies show that exercise slows the aging process dramatically. IN fact, it is slowed by about fifty percent. (Through regular exercise.) Exercise strengthens the muscles, heart, and bones. As the aging process tries to tear bodies down, exercise does its best to fend it off. Yay exercise! If we can start this daily exercise habit at a young age, instead of the bad habits of snacking, we can breed a healthier generation for the world to look upon in awe. But aging prevention isn’t the last in a series of “fortunate events” that occur during exercise, there is another category known as… Psychological benefits. “Exercise physiologists have found that people who exercise feel more energetic than those who do not. “This additional vitality occurs in two ways: alertness for a period directly after a workout, and an overall sense that everyday tasks are easier to do.” (Knowledge 2). When exercising, your body exerts itself. After exercising, your body is “pumped” or excited so to speak. Your body suddenly has less to concentrate on, and so, is more alert. This accounts for your overall sense of alertness. Exercise is hard. Not really hard, just difficult. So, after exercising, the body is relaxed, and feels ready to handle anything. (Besides exercising more.) If the body feels drained of energy, this is probably over-exercising. With new energy from the body being “awoken” or “pumped” so most tasks seem easy. Studies show other benefits of exercise. Non-exercisers are shown to have less ability to handle stress, and are more prone to depression and anxiety. You probably are thinking “I don’t exercise that often, and niether will the children! They only will exercise an hour a day! Can we also get these exercise benefits?” I have you there. Studies ALSO show that even minimal amounts of exercise give these same benefits. For example: a child goes for a jog. Not long, only fifteen minutes or so. But he still is reaping the benefits! He is protecting himself from cardiovascular disease! He’s warding off cancer, he’s improving the health of his body. Just 15 minutes a day. But why stop there? A whole hour doing exercise will do our globally driven future generations a world of good! (No pun intended.) The world today is a hive of inactivity. Only 16 percent of people report having exercise that lasted 20 minutes three or more times a week. (AOA 2) This trend is disturbing.

[edit] Americore

A tag has been placed on Americore, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group or service and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Flyingtoaster1337 09:51, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
