Odlid! was an American alternative rock band that formed in the Quad Cities in 1994. [1]
[2]Formed by High School friends James Zahn and Phil Vernon, the band began rehearsing under another name as a 4-piece in late 1993. Upon the release of the bands vocalist in early 1994, James took the mic and the monicker changed to Odlid!, with Terry Lee at the Drum kit.
By the summer of 1995, the band parted ways with Terry, bringing in Mike Mudd to fill the vacancy behind the drumkit. Amazed by the level of talent Mike brought to the band, Phil and James introduced their latest member to the public after only 5 short days of rehearsals. Later that year, Odlid! entered Minstrel Studios in Iowa City, Iowa and recorded their debut album, Haywood's Mayhem. The album spawned a few singles, including "Girl" and "Dig" that would garner mild college radio play. The novelty track "Flying Saucers Stole The Mall" would later appear on the Hum Productions Compilation "ZOOM."
The band became known for doing odd stunts as a part of their live show, and was often known to give inflatable guitars and records from 80's artists away to fans at their performances. [3]
In 1996, James relocated back to his native Chicago, and while the band continued on, rehearsals and live shows became difficult to schedule, but proceeded at a steady pace. By the summertime, founding member Phil Vernon decided to leave the band and pursue other interests. Answering the call on Bass was Mike's twin brother Matt, who joined instantly and like his brother, made a flawless entry. By year's end, the band was writing new material and plotting a sophomore album.
1997 saw the band enter Hammond, Indiana's Sheffield Studios, where they recorded two tracks, "Thrown Out", and "One Way" for the compilation CD "Twisted America". The tracks would become Odlid!'s finest, and final studio recordings.
In the final days of the band, the material they were working on was taking a much different direction. Though they had always been known for confusing audiences with their varied mix of styles and influences (punk, metal, ska, funk, etc.), the new material was leaning in a darker, almost "industrial" direction at times. The songs that could've been the band's second album exist solely in bootleg live recordings. As the amount of live shows continued to dimish, and the responsibilites of family and career set in, Odlid! quietly disappeared in mid-1998.
