Penarth railway station is the railway station serving the town of Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. It is the terminus of the Penarth branch of the Vale of Glamorgan Line from Cardiff.
It is on an extension of the line originally built by the Taff Vale Railway in 1865 to serve the newly-created docks in Penarth to counter the now famous Cardiff Bute Docks[1]. Where the line now finishes, in the past it carried on through the village of Sully and connected to the Barry Railway at Cadoxton. However, as with most branch lines following the Beeching Axe, the line from the cement works to Cadoxton was removed in the 1960s and when the works closed the line from Penarth Station to it was removed. When built the railway had two or in part three lines but it is now single track.
The station has a small car park, but more commonly used for local needs than for the station. The ticket office is open early morning to mid afternoon each day except Sunday. The building on the left holds offices for local companies and a Jobcentre plus.
All services on this line are operated by Arriva Trains Wales as part of the Valley Lines portion of the National Rail network.
