I Against I (1986) |
Rock for Light is the second official full-length album from hardcore punk & reggae pioneers Bad Brains. It was produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. The 1996 reissue was remixed by Ocasek and bassist Daryl Jenifer. The reissued version features some extra tracks, but also an altered track order, significantly different mixes, and on most tracks, a speed increase of the master which results in a raising of the pitch by one-half step.
The album contains a number of re-recorded songs from the band's self-titled debut album, released the previous year, as well as a number of new hardcore punk and reggae tracks. It would be the last Bad Brains album to exclusively feature only these two styles of music, as the band would eventually experiment with funk, soul, and heavy metal.
It would be the band's last album for three years as the Bad Brains would break up after its release for the first of several times throughout their career.
Kurt Cobain would often include this album in his "favorite albums" lists in his Journals.
The original mix is only available on the out-of-print PVC Records vinyl version, however, some of the original mixes appear on the recent Banned In D.C. compilation.
