Sambians
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sambians were an Old Prussian tribe inhabiting land of Sambia, north of the city of Königsberg (Królewiec) (now Kaliningrad).
In 13th century Sambians were conquered by the Teutonic Knights and Sambia became one of their four dioceses, the other three dioceses, arranged by the papal legate William of Modena, being Pomesania, Warmia and Chelmno Land.
Sambians, mixed with Sudovians resettled there from Sudovia, were able to keep their Baltic language until the beginning of the 18th century.
According to folk etymology, Sambia was named for Samo, a son of Widewuto or Waidewut.
