Snowblood
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Snowblood are a four piece (sometimes five piece) experimental sludge/post rock band from Glasgow, United Kingdom. They have toured the UK and Europe on a yearly basis since 2002 and have recorded two albums. Snowblood started in 2002 amongst good friends who were eager to create music for music's sake, without an agenda and without a plan. Their third album is due for release in 2007.
Snowblood compose lengthy guitar-based pieces, usually focused around the elaboration of a single theme. These pieces are renowned for developing the dynamics between the serene and the brutal side of the post rock and doom metal genres.
The riffs are most often created by the guitar player David Tobin.[citation needed] The bass guitar lines of Graham Young have a dub music reference of some kind and are similar in style to traditional rock music keyboard parts.[citation needed] The drummer, Ewan Mackenzie has been associated with beat driven music such as hip hop and new wave music and incorporates this into a unique style of heavy metal music drumming. Mackenzie also plays keyboards and has used his skills as a producer to record the band's third album. Tracey Fallon plays cello and has recorded on the band's second album 'Being and Becoming' and also features on the soon to be released third album. Her often melancholy and melodic parts incorporate another dimension into the band's music, however it is not known if she is a full-time member of the band. The words and singing of Luke Devlin are often associated with spiritual themes as well as insights into modern life in Scotland. Lyrical content often reflects the band's own internal relations and offers an insight into the workings of the unit.[citation needed]
The individual members of Snowblood have each brought different musical influences into the make up of the band's creations. Obvious influences include Hard Rock, Heavy metal music, Dub music, New wave music, Hardcore Punk, Ambient Music, Experimental Rock, stoner rock and post rock genres. The band's style has been influenced by artists such as Eyehategod, Sleep, Black Sabbath, Neurosis, Kyuss, His Hero is Gone, Joy Division, Slint, Engine Down, Hoover, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Black Flag, King Tubby and The Melvins.[citation needed]
Their first two albums, 'The Human Tragedy' (2004) and 'Being and Becoming' (2005) were both recorded by Neil McNaught at split level Studios in Edinburgh, Scotland. There third album has been recorded by Mackenzie and produced by the band alone in a cottage near the Scottish village of Buckie. It is set for release some time in 2007.
