"When war broke out, they were ordered home on the next ship out. During one watch keeping at night, Milner-Barry sent out an alarm to the rest of the ship when he thought he spotted a U-boat. It turned out to be a porpoise." [2]; is there a WP:RS for this? — Matt Crypto 13:17, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Failed GA

As of [3], the article during the review, I failed this article for Good Article status. The main reason is that the article is not broad enough, criterion 3, WP:WIAGA. The lead section is very short, only contains a single sentence. The biography of the subject is also very short. Please expand more about his early life. Section After the World War II is still stubby. The section name Chess is very awkward. Does it tell something about Chess in general? Expand more about his chess playing style. I look at the References that he is a Sir, but nowhere in the article mentioning about this knightship. Please dig more into books/articles/newspapers. I am sure there are a lot more, because he is a nobelty man. Please also read WP:BLP on how to write a biography of a living person. Whenever it is broad enough as a Good Article, then the article can be renominated back. As always, if you feel disagree about my reviews, then you can ask for re-review. — Indon (reply) — 13:41, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Thankyou for taking the time to review the article, Indon. I have a few responses. 1) I can expand the lead section a little, although the article itself is sufficiently short that a long lead section is not required. 2) I believe that most of the information available from reliable sources is already summarised in the article, and that it addresses all major aspects of the topic. I'm not sure what a "nobelty" man is, but I've spent some time on this, and it seems to me that there isn't all that much more additional material to be found. 3) I know of no other potential source of information about his early life, and I suspect there is none. 4) I can rename or merge the "chess" and "after WWII" sections, and I may be able to dig up a sentence or so on his playing style. His primary notability comes from his WWII work, however, and it is correct for that to form the bulk of his biography. 5) The article already mentions his knighthood. 6) Milner-Barry is not a living person, so it is unclear why you are recommending WP:BLP (or what part of BLP you thought this article transgressed even if he was...) — Matt Crypto 15:26, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
I've expanded the lead, merged the chess information into the other sections, added a note about his contribution to the preservation of Bletchley Park, and added a couple of quotations on his playing style. (I've relisted). — Matt Crypto 16:11, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
References go after a full-stop, not before. M3tal H3ad 00:42, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
I see that's now the official style (I always preferred before myself...); I've changed the article to reflect that. — Matt Crypto 01:27, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] GA round two

See if you can expand the article, it's very short. Also, see if you can make two paras in the lead that summarize the article. Rlevse 20:22, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. Can I just ping back on this? I don't think the article can be expanded much further. As we know, the aim of an encyclopedia article is to summarise the available literature on the topic, and I believe this article does that. I've scoured dozens of books and Googled extensively, and I've even looked at primary sources in the UK National Archives, and my conclusion is that there isn't much more that can be added without going into unnecessary detail (which is mentioned in the criteria as something to avoid), or else, detail that would be better dealt with in other articles (like Hut 6 or Nimzo-Indian Defence). — Matt Crypto 20:46, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA Nomination

Good evening (GMT time); I have passed the article Stuart Milner-Barry as a Good Article on 13/1/07 under the Good Article Criteria. However, I have some advice for improvement; the advice is very simple - expand the article, if possible: it is far too short. Otherwise, well done and Congratulations!

Regards,
Anthonycfc [TC] 19:37, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Anthony. I'll expand the article with anything I can find, but, as I've argued above, there's unlikely to be a great deal more that can be added. — Matt Crypto 09:32, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
