Third Eye (song)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
“Third Eye” is a song by American progressive rock band Tool. It is the fifteenth (and final) track from their second full-length album, Ænima (1996).
The song features several sampled excerpts by the late comedian Bill Hicks, to whom the Ænima album was dedicated. Commenting on the utility of mind altering drugs as augmenting personal, artistic, cultural growth, development, and understanding of the nature of existence. The title of the song may be a reference to the same material Hicks would use, when he would refer to hallucionagenic drugs being used to "Squeegee [his] third eye"
In Psychology, though still speculative, the third eye is said to be triggered by a physical manifestation, "the pineal gland". It is said that the pineal gland may discharge dimethyltryptamine, which is believed to be a chemical precursor brought forth during dreams, meditations, visions, and near-death experiences.
Discounting "Disgustipated" (the last track of Tool's 1993 album Undertow), the vast majority of which is near-silence, Third Eye is the band's longest studio recorded track, running for 13 minutes and 47 seconds.
In the live version that was included with the band's boxed set Salival, they included a different spoken-word excerpt, this time from the late Dr. Timothy Leary.
Musical Points of Interest
- The majority of the piece uses a 6/8 time signature.
- The section from 6:36 to 6:51 is an example of the band's polyrhythmic abilities, layering 4/4 with 6/8.
- The second of two guitar solos features the use of a slide.
