U.S. Route 11 is a north-south United States highway. The route, created in 1926, largley follows the route of the original plan. As of 2006, it is 1,645 miles (2,647 km) long.[1]

[edit] Termini
As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is in Rouses Point, New York on the Canadian border. U.S. 11 and U.S. Route 2 meet, turn north a half mile to the border, and continue as Québec Provincial Highway 223. Its southern terminus is in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in eastern New Orleans, Louisiana at an intersection with U.S. Highway 90.
Until 1929, U.S. 11 ended just south of Picayune, Mississippi at the Pearl River border with Louisiana.
The U.S. 11 bridge across Lake Ponchartrain served as a little-known alternate to the severely damaged Twin Span Bridge on Interstate 10, which was completely closed for six weeks after Hurricane Katrina. The Twin Spans fully reopened to traffic four months later.
[edit] Alternate routes
As of 1929, U.S. 11E and U.S. 11W split in Bristol, Virginia, less than a mile north of the Tennessee state line. The routes rejoin in Knoxville, Tennessee. Together, U.S. 11, U.S. 11E, and U.S. 11W serve the Tennessee-Virginia tri-city area of Bristol, Kingsport, Tennessee (served by U.S. 11W, to the north), and Johnson City, Tennessee (served by U.S. 11E, to the south). From there, the U.S. 11 branches and Interstate 81 travel parallel Appalachian Mountain valleys to Knoxville.
New York State Route 11B and U.S. 11 switched places in the 1980s. New York State Route 11C and U.S. 11 switched places in the 1990s after N.Y. Route 11C was completed, purpose-built to become U.S. 11.
[edit] States traversed
[edit] New York
From the Canadian border, U.S. 11 goes through Rouses Point before turning westward. The highway goes through Malone and Potsdam before turning southwestward.
From Potsdam, the highway goes through Canton and Watertown. At Watertown, U.S. 11 turns southward and begins it's long association with Interstate 81 as it parallels the highway in close proximity to Lake Ontario. At Syracuse, the highway crosses the New York Thruway (Interstate 90) and traverses the Onondaga Indian Reservation just south of the city.
U.S. 11 and I-81 continues to parallel each other as they head south to Binghamton, passing through Cortland in the process. From Binghamton, U.S. 11 continues southeastward to the Pennsylvania border.
[edit] Pennsylvania
U.S. 11 crosses the New York-Pennsylvania state line into Susquehanna. In Lackawanna County, the highway has a short overlap with U.S. 6, splitting up just before going through Scranton. From Scranton, the highway goes through nearby Wilkes-Barre.
It is as Wilkes-Barre that U.S. 11 stops paralleling I-81 and follows the Susquehanna River, passing through municipalities such as Bloomsburg and Selinsgrove. Near Shamokin Dam, the highway joins U.S. 15 and the two highways remain together until they reach Camp Hill, a western suburb of Harrisburg.
From Camp Hill, U.S. 11 parallels I-81 again through Shippensburg and Chambersburg before crossing the Maryland border near State Line.
[edit] Maryland
In Maryland, U.S. 11 continues to parallel I-81, passing through Hagerstown in Washington County before crossing the Potomac River into West Virginia.
[edit] West Virginia
After crossing the Potomac, U.S. 11 traverses about 25 miles in Berkeley County, passing through Martinsburg before crossing into Virginia.
[edit] Virginia
U.S. 11 enters the state about 10 miles northeast of Winchester remaining paralleled with I-81. The highway goes through Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton and Lexington before reaching Roanoke.
West of Roanoke, U.S. 11 pairs with U.S. 460 for 28 miles to Christiansburg, where the two highways split. U.S. 11 continues southwestward through Radford, Wytheville and Abingdon before reaching Bristol, which lies on the Tennessee border.
In Bristol, the highway splits into U.S. 11E and U.S. 11W before crossing the state line.
[edit] Tennessee
U.S. 11 enters Tennessee at Bristol split into U.S. 11E and U.S. 11W. 11E goes southwestward through Johnson City, Greenville and Morristown while 11W goes the same direction - but farther north - through Kingsport. The two rejoin as U.S. 11 in eastern Knoxville.
From Knoxville, the highway parallels Interstates 40 and 75 - later I-75 only - through Sweetwater and Cleveland before reaching Chattanooga.
From Chattanooga, U.S. 11 parallels Interstate 24 to the Georgia (U.S. state) border. U.S. 11 is also paired with Tennessee Highway 38 from Cummings Highway (U.S. 41/U.S. 64/U.S. 72) to the state line.
[edit] Georgia
U.S. 11 travels 21 miles (40 km) through Dade County across the state's northwest corner, paralleling Interstate 59.
[edit] Alabama
U.S. 11 enters Alabama paralleling Interstate 59 to through Fort Payne and Gadsden before reaching Birmingham. From there, the highway continues to parallel I-59 (now joined by Interstate 20) through Tuscaloosa and Livingston to the Mississippi state line. Throughout Alabama, U.S. 11 is paired with unsigned Alabama Highway 7.
[edit] Mississippi
U.S. 11 (along with U.S. 80) continues to parallel I-20/I-59 westward until Meridian. At Meridian, I-59 turns southwestward and U.S. does the same, splitting from U.S. 80. Notable cities the highway pass through include Laurel, Hattiesburg and Picayune. At Nicholson, the highway joins I-59 at Exit 1 and the two highways cross the East Pearl River together into Louisiana.
Note: The Mississippi section of U.S. 11 is defined in Mississippi Code Annotated § 65-3-3.
[edit] Louisiana
On I-59 Exit 3 at Pearl River, U.S. 11 splits away from the highway and parallels it to the west to Slidell. In Slidell, the highway parallels I-10 across Lake Pontchartrain into far eastern New Orleans. It is at Chef Menteur Highway (U.S. 90) that U.S. 11 ends.
