"Under the Water" is a pop song written by Merril Bainbridge, Owen Bolwell and Stan Paulzen, produced by Siew for Bainbridge's debut album The Garden (1995). It was released as the album's second single in June 1995 (see 1995 in music) in Australia and February 18, 1997 (see 1997 in music) around the world. The song is about a lover who drowned.[1]

[edit] Music video
There were two music videos produced to promote the song, the first one for Australia and the second one for the United States. The original Australian version was a simple black and white video of Bainbridge performing the song. However, when Bainbridge broke in the U.S. with her previous single "Mouth", a sleeker video, directed by Martin Kahan,[2] was produced for the American market. It was released on December 1996 and showed a man and a girl in a room filled with water and at the end of the video the man drowns in the water.
[edit] Chart performance
The song became Bainbridge's second top ten hit in her home country. It made it's debut in Australia at number forty-six and eventually peaked at number four, spending sixteen weeks in the Top fifty. The song ended 1995 as the 24th highest selling single for the year and was accredited platinum by ARIA. The song was nominated for an ARIA Award as the Highest Selling Single for 1995 but lost to "Tomorrow" by Silverchair.[3]
The song was released in the United States on February 18, 1997 but failed to match the Top 10 success of "Mouth". It spent only five weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, stalling at number ninety-one.
