[edit] Culture, Sports, and Traditions
The Diliman community, humorously called the Diliman Republic and a "microcosm of the Philippines" has a unique culture among the universities in the country. It is the only university in Metro Manila that has its own extensive system of jeepney transportation owing to its huge size. The university also has a congressional franchise to operate two radio stations (AM and FM) and a television station. Currently, the university only operates DZUP, a community AM radio station. The campus encompasses many residential areas and students often feel a sense of solidarity with the community residents. U.P. Diliman prized being open and accessible to all, reflected in the commitment of the university to academic freedom, and this was shown in the traditional lack of fencing and gates leading into the campus. This has changed in recent years, as the increase in population has led to an increase in traffic and instances of crime in and around the campus. The campus is now fenced and closes most entrances for most of the day, opening them during rush hour. University Avenue, the main road leading into the campus is the only entrance left open at all times during the day, however it is now also monitored by the local U.P. Police.
U.P. Diliman represents the U.P. System at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and participates in all events. The Fighting Maroons have consistently placed in the top three in the overall points race of the UAAP for the past several years.
Two of the most-awaited events in the campus are the Lantern Parade, held on the last week before the Christmas break, and the U.P. Fair, held every February. During the Lantern Parade, various groups within the University create Christmas lanterns and parade around the Academic Oval. The U.P. Fair, organized by the University Student Council, is a week-long event held at the Sunken Garden that features nightly music concerts and amusement park rides.
[edit] National Centers of Excellence/Development
As of 2001, the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines has identified 32 centers of excellence/development (COEs/CODs) in U.P. Diliman. The Diliman campus of the U.P. System thus holds the distinction of having the most COEs/CODs among the country's educational institutions. (See CHED COE/COD List.)
The COEs/CODs in the University are as follows:
Anthropology, Architecture, Biology, Business, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Communication Arts, Computer Engineering, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, English, Filipino, Foreign Languages, Geology, History, Industrial Engineering, Geodetic Engineering, Information Technology Education, Journalism, Literature, Marine Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Music, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Statistics.
