[edit] Irrigation Photos
Thanks VS, they are great and I will replace the current irrigation photo in Riverina with one of the new ones. Also, they will be very useful for the WP:ACOTF article I proposed, Water supply in Australia. Cheers.--Mattinbgn/ talk 10:06, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Yep - although next 5 weeks I'll be quite busy. I would also suggest notifying DanielT5 as he's doing a lot of work on the Wheatbelt region at the moment and with the timing of settlement there it's quite likely soldier resettlement schemes were involved. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:KentuckySoldiersSettlementEstateSettlerscottage.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:KentuckySoldiersSettlementEstateSettlerscottage.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. howcheng {chat} 19:58, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Public Domain due to age
I have tagged with {{PD-Australia}} due to age. Note Public domain images can go on Commons - the same tag is used there. Regards--Golden Wattle talk 20:17, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- I did the other two from the Soldier Settlers page as well --Golden Wattle talk 20:20, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for assisting with all three images. I had not come across this type before hence putting them on to English Wiki - I will move them over to commons now that I know. --VS talk 20:24, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- Fair use images are not allowed on Commons but Public Domain are OK.
- For more info on Public Domain in Australia have a look at the template, basically my use is always to do with age - pre 1955 is usually safe. The ACCC says "photographs (if taken before 1 May 1969, 50 years from the end of the year they were taken; on or after 1 May 1969, 50 years from the end of the year of first publication" The rules change again in 2005 if they were still under copyright at that date. The elapsed time is then 70 years.--Golden Wattle talk 20:33, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for further info. Any ideas as to what category to save them to in Commons? --VS talk 20:39, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- When I am at a loss I go for Commons:Category:History of Australia or something general. You might like to start a page on Soldier Settlement there. I would also categorise Batlow under Towns of the Riverina .... Multiple categories help. You can see the category tree when you look at Commons:Category:Australia and use the plus signs to navigate downwards from what looks relevant. Regards--Golden Wattle talk 20:43, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] IBRA
I don't think I'm capable of implementing a zoomable map. On each of the IBRA region articles I've written so far - Esperance Plains, Mallee (biogeographic region) and Warren (biogeographic region) - I've included both a location map and a detail map. But the detail map has excluded stuff outside the area and has focussed more on capturing land use than geographical context. Perhaps this is where I can take your comments on board. Include features outside the region boundaries in maps like the one below, and be just a wee bit more liberal with my place name captions ;-) Hesperian 12:27, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response Hesperian. The maps are great and I will use them. Interestingly I note that your map of The Mallee region has brought forth a disambiguation I was not previously aware of. In my response to your question I was referring to the The Mallee - as in Sunraysia/Malee. I have taken the opportunity to refer the disambiguation at Mallee. --VS talk 21:37, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'd already included a link at that page; I've removed the duplicate (mine). Hesperian 02:29, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Boinka, Victoria
I thought this article a probable hoax.. but I guess it's not.
However - I would not include it in the "Cities and towns in The Mallee and Sunraysia regions of Australia" template as a town. At best it is a village, but more likely it is a locality within Mildura. I think the same could be said for other placenames included on the template where the population is X(within 7km radius).
BTW. If you are linking to travelmate - could you please change your URL to be one that isn't http://www.travelmate.com.au/MapMaker/MapMaker.asp - you need to include the parameters to make the link go straight to a map of a place, like you have for fallingrain.com.
20:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi GarrieIrons - thanks for your comments. As you would have seen Boinka was not a hoax - in fact it has a rich history. (Actually I was quite happy with the article and its rich start). I take your point on not including it as a town - but if you have a look at the article again you will see that I had not done so - referring to it only as a locality and it is (again as is already posted on that page not within Mildura (it is 174km from that City). To the point of whether localities should or should not be included .... We had the same discussion when constructing Template:Riverina with the consensus agreeing to include localities/communities as a part of the template providing that such a place met strict guidelines (including that the location/community was actually still physically locatable in some way) - see here for details of that discussion. However I realise that by not including the word communities in the template that might not seem so clear so I have adjusted that part this morning at Template:Sunraysia. Finally to your point about www.travelmate.com.au - the link actually goes directly to a search page (a map is not being suggested - only distances are) where any person can type place A and place B to see the distances between the two locations. The alternate - given that there are at least 4 locations being referenced is to make the info box totally unworkable). Cheers. --VS talk 21:20, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RE: AU Falcon
Thanks for your ideas. I will incorporate some of them, but, not to be rude, but I think that the spacing on the information boxes need to be inline with the text, and we need a promotional image of a AU1 and AU2 Falcon to go with the box. BTW: 1. Do you know anything about the EL Falcon? 2. Can you introduce me to some people?
Thanks a heap though. I appreciate any help I can get.
HB4026 06:06, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Ahmmm - well I am not really your best help for the EL Falcon or cars in that way. It is not my primary interest - but I was interested in answering your plea for help on WikiProject Australia. I am not quite sure what point you are making regarding the info box (as I didn't alter it in any way). My main concern was to show you support (as a new editor) and also to point you in the direction of writing good to great articles. Apart from language and grammar - which by and large you have a good grasp of you desperately need to focus on referencing - that means that you really can't write anything unless you can and do back it up with a third party reference. At the moment the article reads a little like a promotional pamphlet but broad references (from a number of sources) will help that. In terms of meeting people - it is quite simply really - edit in your field of interest, edit well showing clear references that give a Neutral Point of View and talk to people on other Car Pages and you will have Falcon (and for that matter Holden, Toyota, Mitisubishi etc) friends before you can say Ford wins Bathurst. Just keep going - make a commitment to edit a few edits every day and you will be noticed very very quickly. --VS talk 06:16, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Riverina GA
Hi VS. Thanks for making a start on the Riverina article. Work and illness (nothing serious, just annoying) have kept me away from Wikipedia more than I would like. Things are starting to improve on both counts so should be back into it shortly.--Mattinbgn/ talk 11:00, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
I think it may be difficult to assert a fair use rationale for the CSU logo in the Riverina article. It may be worth replacing it with an actual photo of the CSU Wagga campus if possible. In my opinion this would be a better illustration than the logo of CSU's presence in the Riverina as well. Your thoughts?--Mattinbgn/ talk 21:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes - I agree - Consider it done - I will take a few of the campus either some time today or tomorrow (I am in the neighbourhood over the next couple of days). I will post the good ones in our Wagga Wagga Commons area and put one up on Riverina in place of the logo. --VS talk 21:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. If you can't get there I may be in Wagga Wagga for work on Friday and should be able to make time to get there.--Mattinbgn/ talk 23:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Job's done. I have uploaded new image to Riverina opting for the informative style of pic. However if that is not preferred I will have 6 or 7 others up on Commons and linked to Towns of the Riverina by later this evening. --VS talk 03:23, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- Looks good. I think that nearly all points in the GA review have been addressed with the exception of rewriting the one sentence paragraphs. I intend to try and finish that this evening sometime.--Mattinbgn/ talk 03:34, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Good - glad you approve of image. I will be about tonight so if you need help, or another proof-reader etc pls let me know (it will probably also help prevent edit-conflict if I don't get on the page at the same time as you). --VS talk 04:02, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Bidgee has raised a good point about growth in Wagga Wagga and the sponge city phenomenon. I want to try and incorporate that into the article this evening. As soon as that is done then I think we should ask Nehrams2020back to have a look as soon as possible.--Mattinbgn/ talk 11:55, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks
Thanks a heap for helping me. I am extremely grateful for any help that I can get. With the EL Falcon, thanks anyway :). I also have to apologise, I thought you were the one that deleted the photos, it was another user 'The Paranoid One' that deleted the photos through speedy deletion. How do you upload photos from the net without violating copyright? Thankyou alot HB4026 10:27, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- I suggest you start here to understand fair use of images. It is complex and in most cases simply copying an image (of the type you are looking for) from the net will be a breach of copyright. Of course the easiest way to get around some of this is to get a reasonable digital camera and go hunting for the type of cars you want in your articles and take your own picture. Just a thought.... --VS talk 10:35, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, the only thing I did was change the link of Michael Jones, because it leaded to the Michael Jones disambiguation page. Now it leads to a non-existent page called Michael Jones (scholar), and I also added that guy to the disambiguation page. You can check the changes here Is that correct? --Dpapic 06:17, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. In a general sense what you have done is okay but my question was more in relation to do you have a reference or citation as to when and where (somewhere on the net or in a book or??) that Michael Jones (scholar) said what you the articles says he did? In other words how can I and other wiki readers/editors verify that what was said is correct. If as you say you just changed the link direction then you may not know. If so let me know and I will adjust the article appropriately.--VS talk 06:24, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] counties
this is interesting information, is Yancowinna excluded because of Broken Hill's links with South Australia? I have included a sentence about them being used in industrial relations law at Cadastral divisions of Australia. Thanks mate! --Astrokey44 10:53, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- No problems. I'm glad the info helped. Yancowinna in this case is excluded because of distance from Sydney. Many awards are almost the same from one county to another but may for example include an extra weeks leave and some other entitlements. Put simply those sort of extras were negotiated long ago in an effort to gain a reward for members who were in the union's view working in more isolated areas. A broader (but still general answer) is for me to say that it is unlikely that any county reference will have anything to do with closeness to any other state because of demarcation - that is ownership of the award. I'll try to explain.... The example award is a Metals award "owned" by the NSW branch of the AMWU who would rarely if ever share anything in terms of employees (read members) with their 'comrades' in the SA branch of the AMWU. Partly this is about factionalism and partly because of sheer ability to lobby State parliaments. The whole area is pretty complex but suffice to say that throughout all of the states that have counties there are such examples. Your inclusion in the article encompasses this but if you don't mind I will make a minor adjustment to give it a present tense. Nice talking with you as always. --VS talk 12:45, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Yep that would be my pleasure - a sub-heading that talks about Relevance of counties in Industrial Relations or similar? I will turn my mind to it over the next few days.--VS talk 12:55, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- wow thats a great site! (nope hadnt seen it before) that will be useful on adding to town infoboxes. Thanks! Ill go add it to the article now.. --Astrokey44 13:25, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Thought it might be useful on NSW site - my pleasure again. Glad to be of some assistance.--VS talk 13:35, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Great! I have made locator maps for all the counties you have created and added them to the articles. Let me know if there are any others.. I will have to get round to doing the rest of them soon anyway. --Astrokey44 13:35, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
By the way something else to note is that many of the counties have rivers as their borders so that towns on a river are sometimes in two counties - for instance the part of Wagga Wagga south of the Murrumbidgee is in Wynyard County, but North Wagga is in Clarendon County. You can see this on this detailed map --Astrokey44 01:06, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks - I did notice that on the Geographical Names Board of NSW site. So what I am doing at the moment is picking the actual place name of eg: Wagga Wagga rather than North or South Wagga Wagga etc and using that county. However when I eventually get around to suburbs I will choose the actual place and county nominated. --VS talk 01:12, 12 March 2007 (UTC) PS My intention is to go through the 250 odd names on template:Riverina first and send you updates on any new county stubs I start.
Done maps for those now.. btw I have updated the infobox so that you can include the parish of the county as well as I have tried out with Temora. The geographic names board link you gave is great that it includes the parish too! --Astrokey44 09:03, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- Never mind that, I should warn you to put off adding any more counties to the town infoboxes until the discussion at Template_talk:Infobox_Australian_Place#counties finishes, as they may be deleted. --Astrokey44 12:53, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
I would like to see the info on them kept too, the small towns look great with the parish, county, along with the lga and electoral districts listed --Astrokey44 08:49, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Hopefully, I have supported it. Have also left a link to there from WP:AWNB --Astrokey44 12:15, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I agree that this should count as a support vote. it doesnt look like there will be any more votes as there hasnt been for a week. --Astrokey44 08:09, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
I have added stub articles for the counties you mentioned. Regards, --Astrokey44 02:32, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
No worries, I have fixed the image, its easy to do since I still have the original svg file. Thanks for adding to the list, I didnt have a list of them so I was only listing them from the map, not an easy way to transcribe . By the way I just noticed alot of inbound links to NSW county articles from the geneology wikia [1] some disambiguation pages might have to be created - some of them link straight to a US county --Astrokey44 13:45, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- Wow - I've never seen a genealogy page before - I agree some disambig pages will need to come also. I don't know if you have noticed that I have created all of the pages (that weren't there previously) from A to B including where the name came from. I have all of the rest created as a word document ready to go and will continue tomorrow putting them up. It is very interesting seeing where the names for each county came from.... I guess if you have time you might like to add county specific images to the pages without? I am enjoying this work - thanks for letting me help. --VS talk 13:52, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, sure Ill try to get some more locator maps made up for the new counties. The name info is great, this would be good for all of them.. and any other info you have on them too. Cheers, --Astrokey44 14:05, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well I added that information from Nineteen Counties, but it may be incorrect as the counties were certainly used before then, as shown on a 1789 map [2]. Perhaps you should ask Golden Wattle who added it... I wonder if it is actually the parishes which are supposed to be fifteen-25 sq. miles, and hundreds of forty square miles - I know there were hundreds proclaimed in Cumberland County about that time, but they were later repealed. --Astrokey44 02:59, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough - I might just go in and adjust the information (as not having it would be more accurate at this time). Can't ask Golden Wattle - she is totally retired from the project (unfortunately).--VS talk 03:04, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
