Virginia Coalition is a rock band from Alexandria, Virginia, who met in the early 1990s through their music class at T. C. Williams High School. Referred to as VACO by fans, the band released their first album, The Colors of The Sound in 1998. VACO's live shows are known for their soulfully frenetic atmosphere.
The band's current lineup consists of:
- Andrew Poliakoff - lead vocals, guitar, percussion
- Paul Ottinger - keyboards, percussion, vocals, bass guitar, guitar,
- Jarrett Nicolay - bass guitar, banjo, guitar, vocals, Casio
Former songwriter and lead guitarist Steve Dawson left the band in late 2003 to spend more time with his wife, Jaime Nolan, and the couple's first daughter. Dawson was a significant contributor to the band's first three albums. In September 2006, Dawson joined VACO for two hometown shows at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Dawson's two toddlers briefly joined the band on stage for the first of these two shows. In February 2007, VACO announced the departure of another founding member, John Patrick (drums/vocals). No reasons were given for the split (though it is rumored that it was not amicable) and it is still unclear who will replace him.
