Welcome to the Glaciers WikiProject, a collaboration area and group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Glaciers.
(For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and the Guide to WikiProjects).
- Goals
- This WikiProject aims to enhance information on glaciers, glaciology and related articles.
- Scope
- All articles about glaciers, glaciology, geologic and geographical impacts from glaciers, as well as climatological articles directly related to glaciers.
![The Malaspina Glacier is so large that it can only seen in its entirety from space; this 1994 photo from STS-66, on a rare clear day, is of an area about 100 km (60 mi) across.](../../../upload/shared/thumb/2/2c/Malaspina_Glacier_from_space.jpg/290px-Malaspina_Glacier_from_space.jpg)

[edit] Templates
[edit] Glacier infobox
At right is an example of the infobox that can be used for glacier articles. Further instructions on the usage of the infobox can be found at the infobox talk page.
Gannett Glacier (EXAMPLE) | |
---|---|
|
|
Type | Mountain glacier |
Location | Wyoming, U.S. |
Coordinates | |
Area | 896 acres (3.63 km²) |
Terminus | Moraine |
Status | Retreating |
Helpful pointers:
- If one knows the length and width of a glacier in feet, the area can be determined by multiplying the length by the width and dividing the result by 43,560. This will give one the acreage. To do metric conversions it is recommended one use Google by simply typing the distance or area and then to the conversion one wishes to make.
- It is generally standard practice to have metric distances and areas in articles shown first with United States customary units second unless the article is about a glacier in the U.S. In scientific articles, metric is generally considered to be the standard and customary units are used only as a courtesy. Either way is fine.
- Glaciers are sometimes more difficult to locate on a map than are mountains, so a query on a certain mountain known to be close the glacier may help narrow down the search.
[edit] Wikiproject messagebox
{{Messagebox glaciers}} can be added near the top of talk pages. The template produces the following message:
This template automatically adds article talk pages to Category:WikiProject Glaciers articles by quality.
[edit] Stub articles
{{Glaciology-stub}} can be added to the bottom of article pages related to this project. A stub is generally any article that doesn't have at least one reliable reference, two paragraphs of information and or lacks appropriate links to categories. Please add the stub template to the article page of articles which meet this criteria and as discussed at the stub guideline page.
All articles that are tagged as stubs automatically link to Category:Glaciology stubs.
