WSIU is a collection of public broadcast outlets, based and located in Carbondale, Illinois, at Southern Illinois University.
As a PBS member television station. WSIU, channel 8, is based in Tamaroa, Illinois, as well as a repeater station, WUSI, channel 16, in Dundas, Illinois. WSIU and WUSI also broadcasts digital signals: WSIU on 40, WUSI on 19. Altogether, the stations reach portions of the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana. WSIU-TV and WUSI-TV are unusual among television stations, and PBS stations in particular, in that they both broadcast in monophonic audio, rather than stereo, (though the digital channels are broadcast in stereo). Consequently, many viewers who live within WSIU-TV's or WUSI-TV's service areas and can receive KETC (channel 9, St. Louis) watch KETC instead. On the other hand, WUSI-TV has an advantage over Vincennes, Ind.'s WVUT-TV (both of which are in the Terre Haute, Indiana, market area) in that it has a stronger signal and can probably reach the majority of the market area more easily.
SIU also operates a radio station, which is a member of NPR and PRI. SIU's radio stations are WSIU, 91.9 FM, WUSI, 90.3 FM, and WVSI, 88.9 FM, which transmit from Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Most workers involved in these radio and television stations are students concurrently attending classes at the college.
The Television Post Production Supervisor at the station is Steve North. Mr. North works with many of the students at Southern Illinois University, that volunteer at his post production facility. If the volunteers prove themselves, they have the opportunity to move on to part-time status. Mr. North's workers have moved on to some of the most prestigious production houses, network affiliates, and national networks in the United States. The facility utilizes both linear and non-linear editing.
[edit] Programming
BBC World News, a non-PBS program, is shown at 5:00 a.m. Central Time (the same time as BBC America), Monday through Friday.
While classes are in session, River Region Evening Edition, a live student produced newscast, is shown Monday through Thursday at 5:00 p.m. CT, with repeats of WSIU InFocus being shown on Friday at 5:00 p.m. CT. Between semesters when college is not in session or during summer sessions, in addition to the morning broadcast, BBC World News is shown at 5:00 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.
The Emmy winning, student produced alt.news 26:46 occasionally airs on Sunday's at 10:00 p.m.
