La historia se centra en la relación de dos amigas adolescentes, Enid (Thora Birch) y Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), quienes acanban de terminar la secundaria y se sienten inseguras por su futuro. Mientras sucenden conflictos entre la amistad de Enid y Rebecca, Enid conoce a Seymour (Steve Buscemi), un solitario y apartado de la sociedad coleccionista de discos, Enid se da cuenta de que tiene mucho en común con él.
