W 1967 roku grupa wydaje swój pierwszy album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (ang. Dudziarz u bram świtu). Uznawany jest on za najlepszy brytyjski album psychodelicznego rocka. 11 piosenek zawartych w albumie, o czasie trwania od 2 do 10 minut, stanowi typową psychodeliczną mieszankę: melodyjne, chwytliwe refreny, zaskakujące fantasmagoryczne teksty oraz długie instrumentalne pasaże. Uwagę zwracają szczególnie "Astronomy Domine", "Pow R. Toc H" i "Interstellar Overdrive", które są prekursorami stylu space rocka. Album był przede wszystkim dziełem Syda Barretta, choć pozostali muzycy także zaczęli pokazywać swoją klasę.
Pierwszy album był wyjątkowy dla grupy. Jego styl nie był jednak kontynuowany ze względu na pogłębiające się uzależnienie od narkotyków Syda Barretta.
