Middle school

Middle school is a school between elementary school (grades 1-4 or 1-6) and high school (grades 9-12 or 10-12). What grades are in middle school depend on the school district (local school authority). Middle school is also sometimes called junior high school or just junior high. Organization of the school day often differs between elementary, middle, and high schools. In contrast to elementary schools, where students often remain with one or two teachers for the majority of the school day, middle school is typically the first time in which students change teachers after each period of usually around one hour. Students often enroll in 6 to 8 subjects, and will be taught by a different teacher for each subject. This is also the first year they must 'dress out', or change clothes for P.E. (physical education) The schedule changes, compared with the one teacher-all subjects model followed by many elementary schools, promotes more independence on the part of the pupil seeing that they no longer have the guidance of one primary teacher or advisor. In addition, students are often given more say in the selection of classes, specifically in regards to electives courses. In general, middle school acts as a transitional period between the relatively homogenous elementary school structure and the much more diverse and individualized high school structure.
