Mount Merapi (Gunung Merapi in Indonesian) is a volcano in Indonesia. It is located on the island of Java. It is conical in shape. It is the most active volcano of Indonesia. In Indonesian, the name means mountain of fire. The volcano has erupted (spewn fire, gases and ash) 68 times, since 1548. Many people have died during its eruptions. As of March 2006, scientists say that there may be another large eruption soon. An earthquake occurred in that region on May 27, 2006. So far, up to 5,000 people are believed to have died in the earthquake. 20,000 are reported to be wounded.[1]
Very often, earthquakes come before a volcano erupts.
