Šaban Šaulić

Šaban Šaulić (Шабан Шаулић) was born on 6 May 1951 in Šabac, Serbia, Yugoslavia. He is a popular Serbian singer extremely popular with fans of Balkan music in all of the former Yugoslavia. His parents, originally from Bijeljina, Bosnia-Herzegovina are ethnic Roma.

He released his debut album in 1969 when he was just eighteen years of age. Around the same time, he served the mandatory Yugoslav army service in Bitola, now in the Republic of Macedonia. His wife's name is Gordana, for whom he wrote and released a hit song for his 1985 album Kafanska noć, titled Gordana. Šaban Šaulić was one the biggest-selling artists in Yugoslavia before 1992. He has also recorded songs in Macedonian, including a remake of the classic hit Zajdi, zajdi. He was born in Šabac but raised in Bosnia with his mother. He continues, however, to sing using the Ekavian accent, a register traditionally associated with Serbia.
