The 3rd Ryder Cup Matches were held at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio on June 26 and 27, 1931. The United States team won the competition by a score of 9 – 3 points.
Prior to the match, there was some controversy with the membership of Great Britain's team. A rule was put in place requiring players to be residents (as well as natives) of the country they were representing, which disqualified Percy Alliss and Aubrey Boomer, two of Great Britain's best players, as they had both taken jobs as club professionals in mainland Europe. Herbert Jolly had qualified, but withdrew shortly before the matches citing recent poor play. Finally, Henry Cotton had objected to a team rule requiring all exhibition winnings to be shared amongst the team, and also did not play.
