The A146 is a road that runs between two of East Anglia's largest population centres - Norwich in Norfolk and Lowestoft in Suffolk.
The entire route has primary classification and as such has been improved over the years but due to the high traffic volumes progress is usually slow.

[edit] Norwich to A143
The road begins as a fork leading from the A11 southbound from Norwich city centre. This section forms a part of the outer ringroad. The next main junction is with the A140 which can take you south to Ipswich or around the outside of Norwich and north to Cromer on the Norfolk coast. Following the A146 brings you to a set of traffic lights. From here the road now follows a roughly west to east direction for the remainder of the journey. A short section of dual carriageway marks the junction with the Norwich southern bypass(A47) and soon after the road returns to single carriageway. The biggest change to the route is at Loddon where the original road goes straight through the town. Along the way we pass through the villages of Thurton and Hales. Eventually you reach a roundabout where the A143 from Diss briefly joins us.
[edit] A143 to Beccles
A short downhill (rare in this area!) section brings us to a roundabout where the A143 splits off and continues on its way to Great Yarmouth. Also on this roundabout are some services - a BP garage and a McDonald's restaurant. The original route of the road used to take you through Gillingham, Beccles and Worlingham but the modern route misses all of this out. As we cross over the River Waveney we leave Norfolk and enter Suffolk and a little further on the road meets up with the A145 at a roundabout.
[edit] Beccles to Oulton Broad
A short distance further on the road crosses over the East Suffolk Line with a level crossing and road takes us past Beccles common and Wild Carr woods on our way to another roundabout. At this point we move off onto another new stretch of road. If you look to your left you can see the original road just through the trees. Along this part of the road we pass through North Cove and Barnby with its (locally)famous Barnby bends. Other points of interest are The Rookery Golf Club and the Carlton Crown Pub. There is another roadabout on entering Carlton Colville and we then begin a northerly run towards Oulton Broad. On the way we pass Oulton Broad South station.
[edit] Oulton Broad to Lowestoft
Before re-crossing the River Waveney the road returns to its previous easterly direction. This final section follows the southern bank of the Waveney and passes some major new retail developments. The road ends at its junction with the A12 just south of Lowestoft's bascule bridge.
[edit] Transport Links
Along the route of the A146 you pass next to or very near to a number of railway stations.
