[edit] Description of cricket

Why is there a description of the game of cricket in the early part of this article? Since this duplicates material only a click away in the 'pedia I would have said it was completely unneccessary. --Ngb 23:08, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It was in response to a request for explanation of cricket terms on WP:FAC. I agree that it looks out of place. -- ALoan (Talk) 23:19, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I think it does seem unnecessary to those of us, like Ngb, ALoan and me who are more than familiar with the game, but if people unfamiliar with it click onto it from the "featured articles" section, they may find it useful. As a cricket fan (even despite Surrey's relegation last season) I'm willing to bypass the second para if that's what it takes for this to become a featured article. I think Brookie's done a good job with it, and I'd hate it to fail on something so easily dealt with. Kind regards, }jguk 23:25, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Well, I'm not entirely convinced that it addresses the FAC comment - ideally, we would explain what a "run" is, what "not out" means, what an "innings" is, etc - of course, lots of these are wikilinked anyway, as is "cricket", and there is always cricket terminology. But I agree that Brookie has done a good job. Now, I must do something about United Kingdom corporation tax before moss grows on it... -- ALoan (Talk) 23:30, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I agree very much that a lot of fine work has gone into this article, and I didn't mean to denigrate that (even by implication!).
I just think the description of cricket is (a) out of place and (b) if it is to be required for this to achieve FA status, a cruel and unusual requirement. In a quick survey of a few articles on major sportsmen I cannot find one that finds it neccessary to explain the sport. The second para of David Beckham doesn't say 'Football is a game of two halves...'.
--Ngb 09:07, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
  • I'm with all of you on this one! I personally don't think it is sensible to have a description added in this way - it is rather eccentric and clumsy! Brookie\talk

[edit] Wisden

Just a note to say that Wisden said of the match:

"A Junior house match at Clifton College, begun on Thursday, June 22, 1899, and completed on the following Wednesday, is noteworthy for having produced the greatest score known to have been made by a single player in a game of any description. The hero of the occasion, A. E. J. Collins, was batting for six hours and fifty minutes, his innings being continued in unequal instalments during five days. His hits included a 6, four 5s, thirty-one 4s, thirty-three 3s and 146 2s. The previous best score was that of A. E. Stoddart, who made 485 for the Hampstead Club against the Stoics in 1886. It is remarkable that it was in a Clifton College game that E. F. S. Tylecote made his score of 404 in 1868."

Wisden then gave the scorecard (without bowling analysis).

I'm not sure that this adds anything to what's in the article (clearly the writer of the Wisden Cricinfo article would have been aware of what Wisden said). However, if you do want to use it, the reference is "Wisden Anthology 1864-1900, edited by Benny Green ISBN-0-356-10732-9". Kind regards, jguk 08:00, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Excellent, have added, but is the ISBN correct? COPAC thinks it is ISBN 0354085557. [1]-- ALoan (Talk) 12:34, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I have a copy of the 1985 reprint. The link you give appears to relate to an earlier 1979 print. I suppose you pays your money and you takes your choice, jguk 12:47, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Ah - COPAC coulnd't find the later print. [2] Ho hum. -- ALoan (Talk) 14:41, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I am not much bothered either way, but I thought the wikipedia convention on people's intials was to write A. E. J. Collins, rather than AEJ Collins. See: Initials in names should each be followed by a period and a space; for example: H. G. Wells., Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) cheers, --Monk Bretton 13:06, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Done. -- ALoan (Talk) 13:20, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

Just wanted to note numerous spelling/grammar errors in the main section. Can't someone proof a featured article better than this?

Can you let us know what the errors are, or be bold and correct them yourself? -- ALoan (Talk) 13:20, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

It does seem very odd for the opening sentence to refer to AEJ Collins as Captain Collins, considering that he is notable for a feat done when he was 13. The cricket sites don't; in fact, they don't even mention his final promotion. Is the date findable? Was it when he left for France? in the field? I moved it to the military paragraph. [edit] OGG audio quality

With all respect to the speaker who obviously tried his best, the quality of the spoken audio file is rather poor. Lots of distortion in the background. Perhaps someone with better recording equipment can give this another try. --Peripatetic 18:17, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Collins' Piece

I have reverted the anon editor's name change - until it is verified - I was at Clifton College last week and saw nothing to suggest that the name has been changed. Brookie :) - a will o' the wisp ! (Whisper...) 14:52, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fuller-Eberle

Re this edit, according to the scorecard only one Fuller-Eberle played in the match. His first name was Victor according to his (Eberle's) Wisden obit and the Tim Rice article. Tintin (talk) 05:01, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Record breaking partnership in a school match that reminded me of Collins

Have a look at this report. Worthy of an article? 84.13.136.168 16:08, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox

Is this really necessary? He is hardly famous for his military exploits. -- ALoan (Talk) 21:47, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
