Released on July 12, 2005 and distributed only to radio stations, A Missing Chromosome is a compilation of various non-LP tracks and B-sides by The Mars Volta. The title comes from the first line of the chorus in "A Plague Upon Your Hissing," "a missing chromosome walks."

Produced by Alex Newport and The Mars Volta for the Tremulant EP. - Tracks 4-5 recorded 2002 - 2003 at The Mansion, Los Angeles.
Produced by Rick Rubin and The Mars Volta for De-loused in the Comatorium; track 4 was left off the album, while track 5 appeared on The Australian Tour edition and the UK release. - Tracks 6-7 recorded 2004.
Produced by The Mars Volta for Frances the Mute; track 6 appears on the "L'Via L'Viaquez" single, while track 7 appears on the "Widow" single (along with a live version of the title track).

- Many of the lyrics for "A Plague Upon Your Hissing" would later appear in the song "Day of the Baphomets", on their 2006 LP Amputechture.
- "Frances The Mute" was originally meant to be the first track on Frances The Mute. However, due to the time constraints of a compact disc and Universal Records' unwillingness to release a double album, the song was cut from the tracklisting.
