[edit] Re: Cooking pot

I deleted the cooking pot article because the current contents were just a rephrasing of the title. If you take out the "typically used" (which really doesn't provide any extra information) you have "A cooking pot is a pot used for cooking." By all means, we should have an article about cooking pots, but that wasn't much of a start, and I maintain that it was a valid speedy. - RedWordSmith 04:31, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

  • Fair enough. I've recreated the article, hopefully with enough of a start that someone might see fit to expand it properly. --Alan Au 04:35, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

What is this "IP moderate" you have banished my vandal to? Instant Punishment? Adam 09:05, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

I think that you skew the line of vandalism and patent nonsense. If you read the articles for these two topics, you might notice that the article in question does not apply. I would also highly encourage a socratic discussion of the article, instead of immediately flagging it for deletion.--Voice Of Reason 01:39, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion question

Hi. I wrote the article about the college newspaper that you thought should be deleted. It's totally fine. I understand that's the whole point of the Wikipedia. But since I'm new to this, I was wondering if you might do me two favors: (1) share with me what your criteria for deciding whether something doesn't belong; and (2) tell me a little about how the whole delete-or-not-delete process works. Thanks. --Kidicarus222 04:09, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ok Adam Thanks

I see my article has been deleted. Based on what you say I have no idea how to better it, it was 100x times better than some others around here. It seems there are double or even triple standards for deletion. Check wiki for Corbis. It is a disgrace and never got erased or corrected. Not at all informative, more like 1min worth of time. Eitherway best of luck but be sure to check more articles as there are many useless stuff that avoids your radar. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jamesbenet (talkcontribs) 03:32, 22 September 2005.

[edit] WP:CP

Hi, you've reported copyright infringements to WP:CP in the last week, a new measure was recently passed to allow the speedy deltion of new pages that are cut and paste copyvios. Please follow these instructions if you come across this type of copyvio. Thanks. --nixie 00:05, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Blatant copyright infringements may now be "speedied"

If an article and all its revisions are unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider and there is no assertion of permission, ownership or fair use and none seems likely, and the article is less than 48 hours old, it may be speedily deleted. See CSD A8 for full conditions.

After notifying the uploading editor by using wording similar to:

{{nothanks-sd|pg=page name|url=url of source}} -- ~~~~

Blank the page and replace the text with

{{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

to the article in question, leaving the content visible. An administrator will examine the article and decide whether to speedily delete it or not.

[edit] Information science

Yeah, I'm sorry, I wanted to leave a message on your talk page first, but I also felt it should be moved quickly as the describtion of Category:Information science was changed to that of library and information science. [edit] Wikipedia Userboxes/Computing

Heylo, Alan Au! I've added the ISPs to the computing area, becuase i thought canadian ISPs would fit as well as the american ones. I mean...canada was the second or third country online, and we do have a massive internet user base (somewhere along 4 million out of our 32.1 million!). If you wish, you *can* remove them, but i think they fit in... the ones i've added were Cogeco, Rogers, Bell Sympatico, MNSi, Jet2.net, Shaw, and IGS (Information Gateway Services).

[edit] Virtual Ethnograpy

Hi Alan, Thanks for alerting me to this - I was not sure where the original text came from. I was extremely surprised to come back to the article this morning to find it marked as a copyright violation! I have posted a revised version of this entry on the "Virtual Ethnography/Temp" page and I hope the problem has been fixed by appropriately referencing the source.

If you still feel the first paragraph represents a copyright violation, let me know and I will try to re-write it, but there are only so many ways you can say "virtual ethnography is new development in the field of anthropology"!

[edit] Molecular Station Bioinformatics Portal

Is there a reason Molecular Station Bioinformatics is being removed form Directories & portals in Bioinformatics? Bioinformatics

It is a portal and a directory as the other and is a larger resource.

The site is the biggest bioinformatics portal right now with over 800 links.

If you have a good reason to classify it as spam (which would be difficult considering the nature of the other links there now) post it here. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 142.20.136.242 (talkcontribs).

  • I recommend that you take a look at the WP:NOT and WP:SPAM pages, which may help you better understand why external links are often unwelcome. Anyhow, since you asked for reasons, here are some of mine:
    1. You are an anonymous user, and you do not sign your comments. While this is understandable for a new editor, it severely weakens your credibility.
    2. You have very few edits, the majority of which seem to be additions of external links to commercial sites. This can be fixed by establishing a stronger edit history.
    3. The links were added to Wikipedia without any explanation in either the edit summary or the talk page. Unfortunately, this may not be sufficient if the link is truly inappropriate.
    4. The target site doesn't appear to contain any substantial content, and is really only a collection of links. This makes it a poor resource.
    5. The target site contains several non-functional links (in particular, the "about us" section). This also makes it a poor resource.
    6. The target site runs advertisements, and includes invitations for further sponsorship. This raises questions about commercial intent.
    7. The target site does not appear to have any policy governing user-added information, which means that its quality and accuracy is suspect.
    8. The discussion at User_talk:Kirill_Lokshin/Archive_4#Link_spam indicates that other members of the community consider the links to be inappropriate.
I'm sorry if you disagree with this assessment, and I hope that you will continue to look for ways to contribute in a less controversial manner. In particular, I recommend you establish a stronger edit history by registering for a named account and contributing content (not just links) to articles. Perhaps then, your addition of external links might be viewed more favorably. However, right now I have no way of knowing whether you are trying to contribute in good faith, or if you're simply trying to exploit Wikipedia for personal benefit. --Alan Au 08:13, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
  • Also, if it makes you feel any better, I've removed the entire "Directories & Portals" section from the Bioinformatics article. --Alan Au 08:28, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
I am not sure who posted the previous links which you considered spam, however the site is quite new and quite good, and has been updated. Bioinformatics now contains many features such as bioinformatics news, Articles, and as mentioned a very detailed source of bioinformatic tools and databases. I am not here to spam, simply to add information such as RNA bioinformatics which is quite important, and point users to a new and upcoming resource. Also the page that I referred to is not a directory of links. Sorry for any misunderstandings as I am a new user and new to the ways of the wiki. However, I believe my molecular and bioinformatics knowledge to be extremely good. Kindly, --Bioinformin
You mention on my talk page that RNA Bioinformatics has "zero hits" on Pubmed. Are you sure you know how to do PubMed searches? Are you sure you know how many articles came up? I received 1424. If you are not an expert on Bioinformatics why do you edit a Bioinformatics page? "RNA Bioinformatics" obviously has zero hits on pubmed as it is a general category, not something people write about on pubmed. Similarly, "Protein Bioinformatics" on pubmed only gets 6 hits from the database, although it has been used in hundreds of thousands of articles. Learn to use pubmed appropriately, and you should welcome new members which may not know everything about wikipedia, but may know much more than you about Bioinformatics and Science. For all you know a new member could be a professor of Bioinformatics, and for all I know you could be a high school student. Also, if you people have any reasons to not want good resources on wikipedia simply because you are webmasters of a competing site, I will make sure to report you to wikipedia authorities as what I am posting is not linkspam and I was contributing information to the article and not only posting external links. -- Bioinformin

For example, acceptance of "RNA Bioinformatics": *RNA World Website. Another example RNA Bioinformatics Presentation RNA Bioinformatics is used for the study of: - Viruses - Translation - Splicing - RNAi - RNA enzymatic activity - RNA binding factors - Devolpment --Bioinformin

[edit] Sneaky "spam"

There was nothing sneaky about it. I was simply taking advantage of a marketing opportunity I thought I'd discovered. I didn't add anything to Wikipedia that wasn't of value or relevance. There are plenty of existing external links that serve the purposes of the individuals to whom the links belong. Aside from linking to an excellent source of the very subject matter, I made a couple intelligent edits to an obviously biased article. Nothing wrong with attempting to create some balance. Try not to be so power-hungry. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.167.66.134 (talkcontribs).

Edit away at the links. I'm not going to complain. It's something that needed to be done. But maybe save the Realhapa site? Those folks are vigilant and do seem to represent a widespread POV here in the islands. The Chronicle book is marketing, remove. Zora 07:25, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Aack! Getting rid of all of them is going a little too far. If you're going to prune links, you need to click on each one, read enough to judge whether it's useful or not, and then reduce it to, say, five links. If it takes too much time to do that, then don't do anything! I'll get to it later. Zora 07:38, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Hey Alan, I pruned away a bunch of broken links, and gave a once over on the working ones - I'm torn on the hapas.com and realhapas.com: although Zora speaks of a widespread POV that hapa only refers to kanaka maoli mixtures, for all my life in Hawaii I never encountered it - realhapas.com was created by someone who had a bad experience/flame war on hapas.com, I'm pretty sure it's tin-foil hat. Anyway, let me know what you think of the edits, thanks for bringing up the linkspam problem for everyone to address. --JereKrischel 20:59, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

well, personally, i dont like long pages, they seem overcrowded. if individual ones arent good, then hour bout individual pages for the first 12 hours and the second 12 hours? only 2 new pages, and it'll cut back on the page length some -Xornok 06:22, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
well, i did the same thing for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica page, it took me a few hours, but i was bored. people dont seem to mind. in fact, theyve started adding more details now that they dont have a limited space for only one episode on a master page. and, if people dont like it, they can revert it, i dont care, i just have free time and think that it would make navigating a little easier... -Xornok 06:31, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding Hapa

That is hypocrtical because each of those links are links to other people's personal websites and groups. The page suggested for hapa's give hapa's a resource to not only convene but also learn genuine perspectives. If I am not allowed to post a website that is more than resourceful yet, someone from Mixed Folks whose link does not even directly attend to the word Hapa then clearly there is an issue here and quite ironically a sense of biasm. You can not give me a good reason why X-Plicitely Mixed's Hapa website can not be there but a overly broad website is allowed too. As a matter of fact XP has a forum dedicated exclusively to Hapa's whereas most of those websites (excluding Eurasian nation and Hapas) don't even do that. If you continue and support this type of biasm by the constant editing of the link to X-Plicitely Mixed's Hapa site, I will bring up a dispute and personally contact Wikipedia myself (Call them, etc, the whole 9 yards). X-Plicitely Mixed's Hapa site is not commercial, do you see any products sold? Clearly not, nor is it anyone's personal website, rather a professional one meant to attend a Multiracial and in that case, Hapa/Eurasian audience. I would like to to diffuse in the most peaceful manor, please clarrify your reason's, otherwise I will handle this another way I trust; rather un-preferably, I'm sure we can work out something. Again I see hypocrisy.

Another thing, based on the history under the word Eurasian, you are seen reverting to a previous version. I find it ironic that you allow the eurasian webpage of X-Plicitley Mixed to be broadcasted under the word Eurasian yet you don't with the word Hapa. As a matter of fact you desire to place the link in a position that seems of your personal preference. Either way I have the history saved and will make my case to the appropiate individuals if we can not resovle a legitable and justifiable stance.

Interesting enough I also checked on the word blasian. You delted the message board that goes to a blasian (meant for those half black and half asian) on X-Plicitley Mixed. I would also like an explanation about this? Everything seems to be perfect timing Alan. Odd, I look forward to hearing from you, if not, from your superiors, to the top of Wikipedia. Guranteed dear sir. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Liberalpunt (talkcontribs) .

Hey ALan. Thank you for your response. I am going to follow up on all of this very closely later on. At the time being may I humbly ask that you restore the forum board on the blasian forum. The link posted before was up for almost a month plus until you removed it. There are extremely few blasian resources and blasians looking for a perfect discussion group would find that link absolutely suitable for them my kind friend.

All the best Alan, and pssst.. Goodluck on those studies!—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Liberalpunt (talkcontribs) .

[edit] VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:04, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] GolfBuzz

Alan, thanks for your concerns on GolfBuzz it definitely was not meant as spam rather to focus on the niche social networking sites and to provide and example. On the social networking page they reference the niche sites however they provide no examples. GoldBuzz is the largest social network in the golf arena. It did not make sense to refer to niche social networks and not have 1 example. I am glad that your referenced that it was not self promoting because great effort was made to make it that way a new section is going to be added on Monday to list press references to add to its credibility. Can you remove you recommendation or tell me what needs to be done? I have been working with other editors however I am getting confilicting messages and it is getting a little frustrating since there is no consitency. I am new to contributing but I do not want to feel like I am wating my time. Prcoulson 20:02, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] US housing bubble for featured article?

Thanks again for making the effort to provide comments and feedback on the US housing bubble article. As summarized at the page Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates#Response_to_objections_raised_above, I believe that all the objections and issues raised have been addressed. Would you please have a look and consider supporting this for "featured article" status? Especially given the (unfortunate) recent news (see, e.g., today's New York Times "most-emailed" Op-Ed "Housing Gets Ugly" here), this would be an especially timely featured article, and help "Wiki" live up to its speedy name. [edit] Adding New Content

Hi Alan Au,

I was wondering how you go about setting up a new section in Wikipedia. I noticed that the Big Bear Lake, California and Big Bear City, California have very little information on the area other than demographics. I added a link to the Big Bear Solar Observatory on the Big Bear City page as it is a premiere Observatory in the United States. I wanted to add information, but it doesn't really seem to fit in the Geography or the Demographics categories and I want to try to contribute in adding some history information and some area information like I see on other localities.

Thanks for your guidance early on in this process. I appreciate it. ALauraBorealis 21:21, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Alan Au,

I was wondering if you could take a look at the edits I have made and let me know if you think I am on the right track now. I am trying to note the sources for my information as clearly as possible, but I want to make sure I am doing it correctly/properly. I would love any suggestions, no matter how small.

[edit] Proxima Technology Edit

Hi,

Thanks for reviewing my article on Proxima Technology. I don't understand what your comment means--I'm hoping that if you can clarify what I'm doing wrong, I can modify the article to fit within the Wikipedia guidelines.

[edit] Tropical cyclones

Yeah, within the wikiproject it's pretty much merge anything that can be fitted into the seasonal article. Thanks for trying to help. I've a feeling that unfortunately we may have to watch the guy in case he creates more (to be honest) useless articles which can easily be put into the seasonal article to make the seasons better, which is the current aim of the project on tropical cyclones. [edit] PGNx Media

Hey Alan,

Thanks for taking an active interest in the page. The article was rewritten to address previous issues with notability and too much personal information about Jose. Please let me know if you have any suggestions to make the page better. These guys are starting their sixth year, which is quite an achivement I think!

[edit] Canvassing

Hi, I would recommend sending people to [{WP:SPAM]] at the moment, as that is the guideline that covers this. In Infomanager's defence, he fist contacted me and the user who closed the AfD. Also DRV is not a vote (even more so than AfD) so really fears of votestacking needn't apply. I think often it is a question of advocacy, rather than canvassing. Rich Farmbrough, 13:40 31 December 2006 (GMT).

  • Rich, thank you. I posted those comments to the users before I was made aware of canvassing. Afterwards, I promptly deleted the comments. Happy new year's to you! Infomanager 06:28, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] PGNx Media Article

Alan: I apologize for my tone in the last response to you. It appeared that you weren't assuming good faith because 1) you previously accused me of being involved with the website or its editors (I know that this is not allowed) and 2) you critized a large reviews archive, which should be seen as a good thing. I should not have accused you of having any personal involvement because I don't know that you do. However, as I did with your previous incorrect accusation, I hope that it can be brushed to the side.

With that said, your last comment implies that you are fairly content with the article. The reason I'm the one arguing it for it is because I am the one that wrote it in July, but unfortunately, I since lost a copy of the source code and couldn't begin the new article myself. Infomanager 06:25, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Read your comment: Thank you for otherwise approving of the article--the original article proposed was poor and I have spent countless hours since then re-writting it. Please see my comments above for the personal accusation; I was out of line. As I mentioned before, I applaud your civic tone and am looking forward to working with you on future projects. I'm actually gathering the research now for an article on Gaming Nexus, but I think it would have the same problems that the PGNx Media article is having so I don't want to spend much time unless I know that it would be worthwhile. Lastly, thanks for the talk page guidelines. Infomanager 06:39, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your AfD Comments

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the GuildCafe AfD. I just wanted to mention that a large part of what the company does is provide a platform for adding social networking features to online games; this is mentioned in the Gamasutra reference. [edit] Games Workshop Online Community

Thank you for commenting on the Games Workshop Onlince Community AfD. I have cleaned up and restructured the article (such as "de-directory-ifying" and cutting down on irrelevant material) per these edits and comments left on the AfD page. It is now more encyclopedic, and the article asserts its subject's impact on the Games Workshop games and indeed miniature wargaming as a whole. Accordingly, I urge you to review your decision, and possibly provide further recommendations to improve the article even more. Thank you! :-) --Grimhelm 17:01, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Replies left on the AfD page. I'm not sure if there is some confusion here on a particular point, so I would like to point out that the article's subject does not refer to a computer game in any capacity (the hobby the community contributes to is miniature wargaming). If I was mistaken to think this, I apologise, but my other comments should address your concerns. --Grimhelm 19:12, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
