[edit] National Assembly

Thanks for the cites on the article. I've been plodding along sporadically getting citations for verifiying things in the article, ultimately I'd like to get the whole thing verified. It's nice that when I put a citation needed tag on something it's taken seriously by another user, usually I just get an argument. There seems to be some misconception out there that adding this tag to an edit means that it is disputed somehow, but this not the case, we should really verify everything. Anyway thanks again. [edit] Barnstar

The Geography Barnstar
To User:AlexD, because most of Wikipedia's articles on academic geography are pretty useless and its good to see someone put some work into themRobdurbar 07:58, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] sectors of industry

Hi, Alex. I see you added Quaternary sector of industry, Tertiary sector of industry, Secondary sector of industry, and Primary sector of industry to the category "Academic Geography". Can you help me understand why the topics belong in that category? -- Mikeblas

[edit] Biogeochemical cycles and biogeography

You sure biogeochem cycles should be added to the biogeog cat? Cheers, Daniel Collins 14:16, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New userboxes

Please do not make new userboxes in template space. They should be made in userspace per WP:GUS. Thank you. Also, the way you were using fair use images wasn't acceptable; you can't just use the logo for decoration everywhere the team's name comes up. --Cyde Weys 15:34, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Geographic societies

You have done a good job on categorizing the geographic societies as well as adding new content for geographical related articles with a more academic leaning tune.Geographer 00:14, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Graduation image

I've just marked Image:Graduationdurham.jpg for deletion because it's licensed under the CC-BY-NC-SA license; unfortunately, this doesn't comply with our image use policy as it's a non-commercial-only license and we can't accept those. You might want to watch out for this in future, to save yourself the hassle of uploading an image only to get it deleted.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Shimgray | talk | 22:33, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately so; any Creative Commons license with the -nc or -nd (non-commercial or no-derivatives) suffixes isn't considered fully free by our image policy. Non-commercial may seem fine, as Wikipedia isn't a commercial project, but we aim to be freely reusable - and prohibiting commercial use can potentially make it legally difficult to produce print editions, or sell CD copies (as happened very successfully with the German edition). Non-derivative works is a little less clearcut, but the rule seems to be that we don't want them - not being able to alter them if need be is just too much of an inconvenience for the limited benefit we'd get from including those images.
For future reference, the CC-BY (attribution) and CC-BY-SA (attribution and share-alike) licenses are "free by Wikipedia standards", but not the other CC licenses. It's quite irritating checking for this on flickr - they really could do with displaying the different licenses using different coloured symbols, or something, rather than just a link...
To get the images deleted, just remove them from whatever pages they were used in and add {{db-noncom}} to the image description page. Thanks, and again, apologies for the inconvenience. Shimgray | talk | 22:49, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography

Hi, Alex. Thanks for your note. I am interested and have the page on my watchlist, but I won't be able to help much for a while.

I am trying to cutback on WP to catch up on some things I've been neglecting in real life. Also, I put most of my WP time working toward a release version, or better version.

But Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography has some overlap with that goal, so I'll try to follow up in that area. Maurreen 17:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Hey - very interested in working for the Geography Wikiproject. You may have noticed I've added Urbanism to the list; it has already been marked by someone else as needing revision, so I thought I'd stick it on there, particularly as I am interested in the subject, and I find revising existing articles a good way of learning more.--Superbfc 18:13, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Naming Conventions

Hello, Alex!

I put a question about name conventions for en:wiki articles on foreign places on the WikiProject Geography talk page. Was this a sensible place to put it, or should it be at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geography#Disscussion and structure (shouldn't it be discussion, by the way?), or somewhere totally different? Geography as an academic subject surely has very little to do with wikipedia article name conventions; but where else could I ask, or read earlier discussion? Thanking in advance, JoergenB 18:52, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] University of Wales

Hi Alex, just a quick note to say thanks for your recent contributions to the University of Wales + associated articles. Its all looking good. I've been meaning to tidy it all up a bit recently but never quite got around to it, save from adding infoboxes and scarf colours to the constituent articles, but with work from yourself, and User:Sloman who formulated the fantastic template, the articles are beginning to get up to speed, so thanks! [edit] Durham college arms

Hi Alex,

First, thanks for all your work on the Durham University and College pages.

I notice that you've edited several of the Durham college articles replacing the versions of the college arms that were there with versions from the college web pages. My understanding of copyright on arms is that, while the basic design is obviously unchanging, the style of drawing of a particular version is subject to its own copyright (see Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems). Unless you have reasons to think otherwise, my understanding is that these new images are copyright, and not really subject to fair use, because free versions (except for Josephine Butler) exist (though it would be nice if the GFDL versions included helms, mantling, mottos etc. - I may work on adding these).

Let me know what you think,

[edit] Creative Commons licenses

Please be carefull when uploading Creative Commons licensed images from Flickr (or elsewhere), not all Creative Commons licenses are considered free content for example Image:Castlecollege.jpg from http://flickr.com/photos/ants_in_my_pants/148884707/ is licensed as Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0, yet you uploaded it as simply Attribution 2.5. These are nowhere near the same licenses (see our Creative Commons Licenses article for details). Most importantly images limiting either commercial use (nc) or the ability to make derivative works (nd) can not be used on Wikipedia (except as fair use if they fulfill all our criterea. Since this image uses a NonCommercial license and fail our fair use creiterea for beeing reproducable I have deleted it (not to mention beeing a copyright violation since you uploaded it with incorect copyright info). If you have uploaded any more images from Flickr please double check that the license information you have provided are actualy match that of the original image and that the license is actualy usable. Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 19:22, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

I see you have already been told this once before, sorry for beeing redundant, but please do double check those uploads. --Sherool (talk) 19:26, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crest of Queen Mary, University of London

As the crest isn't used for day to day purposes, it's not the most familiar of pictures. There's been a query as to whether Image:Qmul-logo.gif actually is the current crest (and I'm not on campus at the moment so can't easily check) - can I ask where you sourced it from? [edit] Bailey Colleges move

I have suggested at Talk:Bailey Colleges that the Bailey Colleges page should probably move to Bailey college to match the Hill college page. — cBuckley (TalkContribs) 22:40, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Crestrhcl.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Crestrhcl.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.

This also applies to Image:Crestleicster.gif, Image:Stchadscrest2.jpg, and Image:Crestustinov.png. Thanks, --Durin 15:58, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A quick hello

Ta for adding the Bogey Man Jardine to the geo society category. Are there many mass murderers in the society. Shall I start a 'list of ...'  ? Regards Fred 14:24, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

I hope you do not think I was implying you thought he was admirable. I'm sure you have a NPOV on such inclusions. I just took the opportunity to whinge about another example of Australia's hidden history. The bogey man reference is to aboriginal mothers who scared their children with 'Frank Jardine will come and get you'. The Australian Dictionary of Biography fails to mention bloody hands. They do mention he was appointed as a Magistrate. May see you round again. Regards Fred 08:43, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Categorification of geographers

There is no universal Categorification and a comprehensive list of geographers in wikipedia. Initally, newly established geographer articles were putting into the List of geographers, however, geographer articles were gradually categorized by nationality or merely given stubs label. Therefore, it is hard to track down all the geographer listings in wiki. The list of geographers is not working efficent enough as it failed to leave a mark in the category section. I am less familiar with the operation in categorification, but I think there is a method to get a comprehensive list of geographers (those now listed in different geographers-related categories) without input each of them manuely. If not, maybe we twos and other concerned indiviuals can figure out a way to solve the current problem. #Category:Geographers is a vacant space currently and is not used for categorification purpose. On the other hand, #Category:Economists has significant entries of economists and other types of category. We follow try to do the same to put existing geogrpaher articles into #Category:Geographers though this is quite painful as well. Please share your thought.

PS: What do you think about the article on Peter Hall (urbanist) without any reference on his geographical background? Maybe we should modify a bit?

I am you have tried to write about the Berkeley School of Geography. Keep it up it is very good attempt.

There are some geographers that I always want to start an article: Peter Haggett, Peter Gould, Richard Chorley, Ron Johnson, Richard Symanski,Richard Peet, Anthony Orme etc... Who do you have on your list?

Lastly, do you know the current number of members for RGS? AAG has about 9000 now.

[edit] Advice requested

I've been attempting to overview and tidy up the geography cats which involve the places where people live. From the top level down to local neighbourhoods. There has been some overlapping and various mis-routings. It's been interesting looking at it all. However, there appear to be two useful ways of doing it - by region, and by size. And these can operate side by side quite usefully. The by region isn't a problem. But the by size has become difficult because User:Hmains wishes to use the term settlements to cover all sizes of communities, and has altered dictionary definitions [1] to fit his own understanding of the term - [2]. Community appears to be the term used most often to describe the places where people live, regardless of size. This is the definition of community - [3]. I did some sorting, placing the cat Human communities under Human geography. Human communities splitting into Urban geography and Rural geography. And those splitting into appropriate sized communities - cities, districts, neighbourhoods, villages, settlements, etc. Hmains has reverted much of my work, and insists on settlements being the term we should use - basing it on this decision, which was a declined proposal to rename Settlements by region to Populated places by region. What do you think? Is settlement an acceptable term for covering human communities ranging from well established cities down to refuge camps. Is Human community a viable alternative? Are there other choices (apart from populated places of course!)? I have started a discussion here and [4], with the above wording, but no response as yet. Am I doing the right thing? [edit] Royal Geographical Society

Hi, I've been doing some tidying up (ongoing) on this category. I see from edit histories that you added a lot of people to this category: great work. But ... when you put the cat tag at the end of the article, could you add their names as well, please? If you don't, they get alphabetised oddly: Martha Black was under M, Christina Lamb was under C etc. You can look at any of the entries to see the correct manner of doing it (I can't cut and paste an example here else it just ends up at the bottom of your talk page as a category!) Many thanks Jasper33 12:14, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Areajournalcover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Areajournalcover.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ↔NMajdantalk 14:35, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

First off, thank you for asking. As of right now, fair use images uploaded before 2006-05-04 do not need fair use rationale but its always a good idea to provide rationale anyway. See the template contained in the previous link for more info on adding rationale. Thanks again.↔NMajdantalk 14:59, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
The purpose is incorrect. It should be something along the lines of: "The image is the front cover of the magazine, which is the main subject of the article." Also, given the size of that image and the original size of the actual cover, yes, the resolution has been reduced. Since the image is of a magazine cover, it is not replaceable (it cannot be replaced by a more free image). I hope that helps.↔NMajdantalk 15:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
