"Amor Prohibido" is the name of a hit single and an album by Tejano superstar Selena. In the single, the singer sings of a man and a woman who fall in love, but it is forbidden. The piece is a real life story, written about Selena's grandparents.

The album solidified Selena as one of the superstars of the Latin music market with the biggest crossover potential. Continuing the formula of her previous albums, A.B. Quintanilla III teamed up with Pete Astudillo and Ricky Vela to come up with Selena's best possible album to date. Its singles became hits at radio stations in the U.S. and Mexico. Unforgettable tracks such as "Amor Prohibido", No Me Queda Mas, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, and many others became instant classics. Selena recorded a duet with Latin Pop group Barrio Boyz, titled "Dondequiera Que Estes," prior to recording "Amor Prohibido". The duet was another #1 hit for Selena. This track originally appeared on the Barrio Boyz album and is included on the reissued version of this album as a bonus track.
The album quickly replaced Gloria Estefan's Mi Tierra at #1 on Billboard Latin Tracks Charts and made the top 200 Billboard's Pop Charts. It was number 1 for 78 weeks, which beat Gloria Estefan's 58 weeks. It also led to six awards at the Tejano Music Awards ceremony, attended by more than 45,000 people, and another Grammy nomination in 1995. Because of the grand success of this album, Selena was signed to a deal to make a complete English-language album under EMI Latin's SBK division. Her soaring popularity all over Mexico and Latin-America required extensive touring, appearances, and performances for Amor Prohibido. (Unfortunately, this stalled efforts to begin work on the crossover album eventually named Dreaming of You.) More than 400,000 copies had sold by the time of Selena's death a year later.

- Selena spent more weeks at number 1 on Billboard Top 50 Latin charts than any other artist. "Amor Prohibido" was number 1 for 78 weeks, which beats Gloria Estefan's 58 weeks.
- Selena was nominated for another Grammy in 1995, for "Amor Prohibido".
- The music video for the song "Amor Prohibido" was shot in Joshua Tree, California in 1994.
