[edit] Differences between versions
The Angel DVD sets were released in at least three encoding formats:
- Region 1 (United States and Canada), in NTSC format
- Region 2 (United Kingdom and Europe), in PAL format
- Region 4 (Australia and New Zealand), in PAL format
Unlike the Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs, the choice of widescreen versus standard screen does not vary by region. In all regions, season one of Angel is presented in the standard format (4:3), and seasons two through five are presented in widescreen (16:9). This matches the way the show itself was broadcast from seasons 3-5, although in the U.S. season 2 was presented as standard format but was changed to widescreen for the DVD.
Aside from the region encoding (and the packaging), the Region 2 and Region 4 DVDs are identical. However, there are several content differences between the Region 1 DVDs and the Region 2 / 4 DVDs.
[edit] Scenes from previous episodes
The Region 2 and 4 DVDs include the scenes from previous episodes ("Previously on Angel) at the beginning of each episode; the Region 1 DVDs do not.
[edit] 4% speed difference
The Region 2 and 4 DVDs play the episodes at 4% faster than the Region 1 DVDs. This reduces the running time of each episode by about two minutes (not counting the "scenes from previous episodes"). It also causes the sound to be raised by two-thirds of a semitone. For example, a C note is raised to a note two-thirds of the way from C to C♯.
The speeds of the different region DVDs match the speeds used during the original television broadcasts in the respective countries. Thus the Region 1 DVD plays the video at the same speed as the American broadcasts (which is the speed at which the show was taped), while the Region 2 and 4 DVDs plays the video at the slightly faster speed that was used during the original British broadcasts. This effect is not particular to the Buffy and Angel DVDs, but rather applies to all television shows, because the NTSC standard uses 30 frames per second in interlaced adjusted to play at correct speed by the 3:2 pulldown process and 24 frames per second when played back in progressive while PAL uses 25 frames per second. Since the masters for ANGEL were NOT deinterlaced by the authoring house the R1 DVD's of ANGEL play much better in interlace as there is too much combing when trying to play them in progressive. While BUFFY was not pure progressive those discs do play well in progressive. But since the signal from a DVD player is ultimately analog, the Region 2 and 4 DVDs will still play at the faster speed when played on an American television with a multi-region DVD.
[edit] Subtitles
In the Region 2 and 4 releases, episodes with commentaries include two English subtitles: the show itself, and the commentary. The Region 1 releases do not offer subtitles for the commentaries.
The Region 1 DVDs also offer a smaller choice of non-English languages subtitles than the Region 2 and 4 DVDs.

[edit] Collections
The complete series box set of Angel (Seasons 1-5) was released in the UK. However, despite strong outcry from fans, only the individual season sets have been released in the US. They've also been released in Australia, in 4 episode, half season, full season and complete series box sets. The complete series collection is seen on the right.
The Angel Season Boxsets were later re-released in the UK, at a lower price point and in cheaper, plastic boxes. Seasons 1 & 2 were released on the 3rd of October 2005, seasons 3 & 4 on the 6th of March 2006, and finally season 5 on the 8th of May 2006.
