Any Given Sunday (TV series)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Any Given Sunday is an Australian television program that airs on the Nine Network. The show is not shown in NSW, the ACT and QLD, replaced by The Sunday Roast
At the start of the 2005 Australian Football League season, this one-hour panel show was created to air between the Sunday Footy Show and Nine's Sunday AFL game. The panel consisted of banter between Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw and Sam Newman, and in a way it was a sports wrap show in the vein of Wide World of Sports, however the sports results took a back seat to the humour of Newman and Brayshaw in particular.
Despite the fact that the show discusses all sorts of sports from around the world, its main focus remains AFL, as it previews the Sunday matches. It always crosses to a commentator for the live 1:00 football match on Nine, usually Dennis Cometti or Dermott Brereton.
[edit] Format change
At the start of 2006, due to Eddie McGuire being appointed CEO of the Nine Network, circumstances meant that the regular team of Brayshaw, Lyon and Newman would be appearing on the revamped Footy Show, meaning that a Sunday-morning show with a similar lineup would be redundant. The show returned in Round 2 of the 2006 season with a different lineup, consisting of comedian Mick Molloy, former swimmer and Nine Network commentator Nicole Livingstone and a rotating third panel member - the first of which was Dermott Brereton.
[edit] Recurring Jokes
- The size of Newman’s collar always looked bigger and Newman would gradually make it bigger by sticking cardboard to it and stapling his tie to it.
- Often showed video of Plymouth Argyle manager Ian Holloway and his unusual quotes during press conferences.
- Sam bought a mechanical monkey toy that was used to indicate when Brayshaw made a joke. A viewer suggested the name “JIMA” (Jim’s Indicative Mirth Advisor) after the name “Spank the Monkey” was deemed to crude for the timeslot. JIMA was even taken to the Logies and was dressed in a miniature tuxedo.
- Often showed video of Brayshaw’s cricketing days which was all filled with highlights of him getting out or falling over.
- Newman and Brayshaw would always make fun of Lyon about being in love with Eagles midfielder Chris Judd. They even showed Lyon a staged video with Judd saying he wasn’t too sure who Lyon was, even though he grew up supporting Melbourne as a kid and was a huge fan of Lyon.
- Lyon and Brayshaw would bring up many of Newman’s ex-girlfriends and especially the incident when he was run over by one of them.
- Newman and Lyon would bring in such things as Giant Mirrors to make fun of Brayshaw being a pretty boy. This also happened on The Sunday Footy Show and the duo, and Footy Show panellists would call him 'The Sexiest Man on Television' among others.
- Every week new host Mick Molloy shows video of Prime Minister John Howard bowling by making it seem like he’s going to show something different and showing that instead. Howard Bowling
[edit] Incidents
- One incident on the show had Australian paceman Shaun Tait bowling a delivery to Garry Lyon, who was bagged by Brayshaw for being scared.
- When guest Layne Beachley was on the show, Newman was testing out a mechanical surfboard in the studio and he accidentally yelled out "F**K" before he fell off. This went live to air in Melbourne and Adelaide and from then onwards the show had an advisory of "May contain coarse language" before each show.
