- 1581 - Francis Drake completed a circumnavigation of the globe, the first Englishman to do so.
- 1721 - Robert Walpole took office as First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons, becoming the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, though the term "Prime Minister" was not used at the time.

Was Francis Drake knighted on April 4? Was he knighted as soon as he stepped off the boat? -- Zoe
- When I checked this fact I saw several references to him being knighted while still on his boat. The Queen wanted a portion of his loot that he stole from the Spanish so she was very motivated to "legitimize" Drake's actions by knighting him. This pissed Philip off something fierce. --mav
