Argentina will hold national presidential and legislative elections on 28 October 2007. Elections for provincial governors and Mayor of Buenos Aires will also take place throughout the year. For the national elections, each of the 23 provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires are considered electoral districts.
Elections for a successor to President Néstor Kirchner will be held in October, although Kirchner himself is currently expected to run for a second term. Confirmed candidates are Carlos Menem, Roberto Lavagna and Elisa Carrió; potential candidates include incumbent Néstor Kirchner, Kirchner's wife Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Mauricio Macri.
In addition, each district will elect a number of members of the Lower House (the Argentine Chamber of Deputies) roughly proportional to their population. Eight districts (Tierra del Fuego, Entre Rios, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Salta, Río Negro, Neuquén and Buenos Aires City) will also elect members to the Upper House of Congress (the Argentine Senate); as usual, three senators will be elected (two for the majority, one for the first minority).
Governors will be elected in Catamarca (March), La Rioja and San Luis (April), Córdoba, Tucumán and Tierra del Fuego (June), Buenos Aires (Mayor) and Río Negro (August), Santa Fe, Jujuy, Buenos Aires Province, Chaco, Corrientes, Neuquén, Misiones and Santa Cruz (September), San Juan, Mendoza, La Pampa and Formosa (October), and Chubut, Salta and Entre Rios (November).
In most provinces, the national elections will be conducted in parallel with local ones, whereby a number of municipalities elect legislative officials (concejales) and in some cases also a mayor (or the equivalent executive post). Each provincial election follows local regulations and some, such as Tucumán, will hold municipal elections on other dates in the year.
