Arlington Avenue (Ottawa)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arlington Avenue is a residential street in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, which runs from east to west in the downtown neighborhood of Centretown. Beginning at Bank Street and running west as far as Booth Street, it is a two-way street with a speed limit of 50 km/h.
Glashan Public School, one of Ottawa's oldest public schools is located on Arlington Street. Between Lyon and Kent Streets, Arlington Avenue also runs behind Ottawa's Central Bus Station, which is located one street south on Catherine Street. One hour free parking is available on this block of Arlington Avenue, for those who do not wish to feed parking meters at the bus station.
Harvey's, Quizno's Subs and Subway all have locations at the corner of Arlington and Bronson. Bell Street United Church is located at the corner of Bell Street and Arlington Avenue.
Because of Arlington's straight nature with no curves, turns of any kind or traffic control except at intersections, traffic calming measures had to be implemented by the city. In the 1990's, a sign prohibiting eastbound passage beyond a point just east of Bronson Avenue was installed. This was to deter motorists from cutting through this residential street. There is a fine of $105.00 for doing so.
Also, more recently speed humps were installed on several blocks, forcing motorists to slow down to 30 km/h.
The street intersects with the following streets:
- Bank Street
- Kent Street
- Lyon Street North
- Bay Street
- Percy Street
- Bronson Avenue
- Cambridge Street North
- Arthur Lane North
- Bell Street North
- Lebreton Street North
- Booth Street
