Merivale Road (Ottawa)

Merivale Road is an important road in Ottawa's west end. It starts in the area of Highway 417 and Island Park Drive. It continues south and ends at Prince of Wales Drive in Barrhaven.

The road starts a small collector route to Carling Avenue where there is the Westgate Shopping Centre. South of Carling Avenue it is a principal route that goes through residential neighborhoods. After passing through the Carlington neighborhood, it passes just west of the Central Experimental Farm, land owned by the federal government. South of Baseline Road, it becomes more of a commercial district. Where it is the continuation of Clyde Avenue (one must turn to continue on Merivale Road), there are numerous commercial businesses and shopping malls. Of those, includes Merivale Mall, Meadowlands Mall and Emerald Plaza. Another major commercial area is located at the intersection of Hunt Club Road.

South of Hunt Club Road, it is mainly an industrial district with many small businesses.

After the industrial area, the rest of the route is a rural road. A former JDS Uniphase building stands near the end of the route.

South of Clyde Avenue, Merivale is known as Ottawa Road #17, while north of Clyde it is Ottawa Road #63.

Speed limits vary throughout this long stretch.

Between Island Park Drive and the Central Experimental Farm, the speed limit is 50 km/h.

Between the Central Experimental Farm and MacFarlane Road in the industrial district the speed limit is 60 km/h.

A small section afterwards as a speed limit of 50 km/h while the rest of the road from north of Fallowfield Road to Prince of Wales Drive the speed limit is 80 km/h.
