[edit] History
Autolux formed in 2000 in Los Angeles, California. Goreshter and Azar met while scoring Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo's play Accidental Death of an Anarchist. Azar met Edwards when her former band, Ednaswap, toured with Edwards' former band Failure. In August of 2000, Autolux made their debut, playing two shows at the Silverlake Lounge. On March 1st, 2001, the band released a self-produced EP entitled Demonstration. It contained five songs recorded on an 8 track in their rehearsal space.
Autolux signed with DMZ, a label created by legendary producer T-Bone Burnett and the Coen Brothers. Burnett was a friend of Azar's, she having played for him in the past. Impressed with band's live show, he approached them after a show and said that he would start his own label and sign them.[citation needed]
In May of 2002, Azar fell from a stage after Autolux had opened for Elvis Costello. Her elbow was shattered. However, due to an experimental surgery involving 8 titanium screws, she made a full and complete recovery.[citation needed]
In November 2002, Autolux entered the studio. Breaking in December, they finished primary recording in January 2003. In contrast with the 8-track recording method employed during the making of "Demonstration", T-Bone Burnett wished to capture the band's live sound on the album. Following the initial recording, the band began to mix and record overdubs to flesh out the songs. Throughout 2003, the album would be mixed numerous times. Dave Sardy, former front-man of Barkmarket, ended up creating the final mix of of the band's debut full length Future Perfect,[citation needed] which was released September 21, 2004. The album was met with high critical praise and the band kicked off 2005 with a 30 date engagement with the The Secret Machines. Throughout the rest of 2005, Autolux continued to play and/or tour with a number of bands, including Clinic, Broadcast, The White Stripes, Shellac, and Beck. In April, the band played Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Soon after, they played All Tomorrow's Parties Music Festival in England curated by auteur Vincent Gallo. Autolux was asked to open for Nine Inch Nails on the Nine Inch Naisl With Teeth tour. After touring with Nine Inch Nails in September and October, the band would end the year by headlining two dates in the Midwest, and then in December opening for The Queens of the Stone Age two nights at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
In January of 2006, Autolux played on Jimmy Kimmel Live. [1] In February 2006, the band wrote a piece, "Tears for an Inhaler," for an exhibit called "Sonic Scenery" at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. [2]
