Avocent Corporation(NASDAQ: AVCT) is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama and employs more than 1,800 employees worldwide as of August 2006. Avocent was formed in 2000 from the merger of the world’s two largest KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) switch manufacturers: Apex and Cybex Computer Products Corporation.

[edit] Strategic Acquisitions
In 2001, Avocent acquired Equinox Systems, the makers of various serial communications devices; in 2002 2C Computing was acquired under the supervision of then CEO Donald Davidson, who focused on PCI-bus extension, suitable to remotely connect office users to datacenter-housed PCs; and Soronti, Inc. the makers of advanced KVM over IP technology in 2003. Crystal Link Technologies, OSA Technologies, Inc., and Sonic Mobility, Inc. were acquired in 2004. Cyclades Corporation was acquired in March 2006 and LANDesk Corporation was acquired in September 2006.
