The school opened its doors to the first wave of students in 1978 as the third high school in the area, with the senior class graduating in Spring 1979.

The building has been extensively expanded and remodeled over the years to keep up with the increasing student numbers.[citation needed]

Barron G. Collier High School is one of the seven members of the Collier County Athletic Conference. The school's official list of sports is separated by season.[2] In 2006, the Barron Collier Cougars Varsity Girls Basketball won the Class 5A state championship[citation needed]. The school also has a Lacrosse Club[citation needed]

The main BCHS campus consists of a large building with a small courtyard towards the east side of the building. Most of the building is on a single level, however there are several classrooms on a second floor above the media center. An auxiliary building contains the ROTC classrooms. The school also includes computer labs, two gymnasiums, a football stadium, a cafeteria with patio, a media center, a TV production studio, darkrooms, and an auditorium Other buildings nearby include the recently constructed Collier County Public Schools administrative center, an elementary school, and a YMCA.
