Barneyboo
Welcome to my user page! Do you wish to leave me a message?
My name is Barney Boo (allegedly) - I'm 18 and live in Glenrothes, Scotland (you know, that lump stuck on top of England). I've just left school, and should probably consider starting one of those life thingys. W00t!
Wikilife
I joined Wikipedia on March 22, 2004, my first contribution being the dramatic conception of the bid-up.tv article. My first 5 months here were sporadic edits to familiar subject matter, but now I consider myself a person without any knowledge, so I just trawl through Recent changes, occassionally making a vague opinion on AfD, correcting typos, reverting vandalism. My Wikipresence (there's something quite Smurfish about this random appending of Wiki to words) is fairly quiet - tending to sort out the tiny mistakes in life. :p
My War on Lists
I hate lists! I strongly disagree with a large number of lists for a few reasons.
- They are a poor relation to the built-in categories system, but without some of the perks, such as the automatically built article list and only having to add or remove category tags to the article.
- Categories have the two-way link between list and article. You can get a listing of the category by clicking on a link within an article, and then navigate to another article in the category from that listing. These lists are one-way, and so they will only be accessed if you go there first - exactly what are the chances that I might randomly want a listing of French Black people in sport?
- Too many lists are far too subjective for my liking, and include those painful phrases such as 'famous', and 'notable'. To test the waters, I decided to put one of these lists that irritated me the most on AfD - List of on-screen clichés. Curiously, it survived without any clear consensus in the discussion.
Shouldn't we migrate some of these lists into categories, and shouldn't we be talking a harder stand on subjective lists?

WikiChain
WikiChain is the working title for a screensaver I am currently developing. Each time it is run, it will follow a new path through Wikipedia, by starting from one random article, and then displaying a randomly selected wikified link on that article. The screensaver shows each article, displaying its journey so far at the side of the screen. The chain is broken if the screensaver reaches an article without a wikified link, or if it follows onto a red link. At this point, an overview of the entire chain is displayed.
The project is still in its infancy, and I will be providing some more info about it shortly.
