Baton Rouge metropolitan area

The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area, centered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is inhabited by about 700,000 people. Comprising the northeastern portion of Acadiana and the western edge of the Florida Parishes regions, it is known as "plantation country", the "capital region", and "the 225" (a reference to its area code).
Livingston and Ascension Parishes are by far the fastest growing in the state. The surge in population there is caused mainly by families from East Baton Rouge Parish who are seeking a better school system for their children. But due to the surge in students, the schools in these areas are becoming overcroweded. At East Ascension High School alone, there were 900 new students at the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year. Pointe Coupee Parish has an aging population that makes up close to 15% of the population, down from 21% in 1990. Despite an influx of new families, this growth cannot keep up with the yearly amount of old age deaths in that parish. In fact, four assisted living facilities serve that parish which has a population of just over 22,000. That is 1 nursing home per 5.5 thousand residents. Iberville Parish is suffering from low birthrates. Most populated areas of St. Helena Parish are miles from medical facilities, grocery stores and other necessities, and is therefore suffering from population decreases.
The effects of Hurricane Katrina temporarily accelerated the metro area's population, though the early estimates of soaring past 1 million have since been refuted. As the repopulation of the greater New Orleans area continues residents are returning and as of July 2006 the greater New Orleans area contained 1.2 million residents. Joachim Singelmann, an LSU sociologist who directs the Louisiana Population Data Center, said Baton Rouge's metro area probably never topped 200,000 new people.[1]
It is possible in the future that, the area could merge along with New Orleans metropolitan area, becoming one of the nation's largest metros.
