The Beauchamp College (pronounced bee chum) is a comprehensive upper school and further education community college, in Oadby, a town on the outskirts of Leicester, England. The current principal is Richard Parker, who replaced Maureen Cruickshank in 2003.
'Beauchamp' was formerly the name of an old-established grammar school in Kibworth, which dated back nearly 600 years to the mid 15th Century. It became an Upper School in 1964 when it moved into new buildings in Oadby, a rapidly growing residential suburban area to the South of Leicester, about four miles from the City of leicester. In 1968 it became fully comprehensive, serving Oadby as its main catchment area as well as drawing from villages up to eight miles in radius outside of Oadby town e.g. Thurnby, Houghton on the Hill.
Beauchamp is also a Community College, with over 2500 part-time students taking part in over 5000 day and evening classes recreational, cultural and academic. Queen bassist John Deacon was a pupil at the school. The college has a varied ethnic population with the majority of the students being either of British or Asian origins.
On April 1, 1996 Beauchamp gained the status of a technology college. It received sponsorship of over £122,000 from The Garfield Weston Foundation, Lloyds Bank, Alliance & Leicester, Midland Bank, Psion, Sainsbury's. The college also receives a maintenance grant of £221,375 from the DfES. This additional funding has enhanced the quality of provision, and allowed for a number of refurbishments and new buildings at the College. The most recently completed was the new sports centre, and due for completion soon is a cutting-edge new design facility, that will include an exhibition centre.
The college has maintaned consistently high standards of education both in GCSE and A-Level examinations and is annually among the top three state schools in the county results-wise.
