Bertram is a fictional character in the television series Family Guy, voiced by Wallace Shawn.
His first appearance was in the third-season episode "Emission Impossible". Peter and Lois Griffin want another baby, and their infant son Stewie will not stand for it. Stewie shrinks to microscopic size and tries to eliminate every sperm in Peter's body. Stewie halts when he is left with only one sperm that will not die. They then meet and try to kill each other before resorting to the sleeper hold, which eventually did come. When they wake up from napping, Stewie makes a pot of coffee and then defeats Bertram. They then settle their differences after realizing how much they both hate Lois and want to kill her. Lois then tells Peter that another baby will be too hard to raise and they give up trying.
His next appearance is in the second half of the fourth season episode "Sibling Rivalry", when Peter tries to freeze some of his sperm in a sperm bank, but ends up spilling all of the bottles in the freezer and filling them with his own sperm instead. Bertram is born nine months later to a lesbian couple, one of his parents being Meg's gym teacher (so his last name is likely not "Griffin" - his new last name is still unrevealed) who wanted a vial of sperm and an applicator that looks like Jodie Foster's knuckles. He then wages war against Stewie with helicopters and stealth jets over control of the playground. Stewie defeats Bertram in a fencing duel. Stewie later says that Bertram admitted defeat and ran off.
Bertram seems to be slightly more okay with cheating than Stewie, as he lied to him about biological warfare.
Bertram also appeared in Family Guy Video Game! where he acts as the main antagonist in Stewie's storyline. He tricks Stewie into destroying Peter's newly-regained PTV satellite and escapes into Peter's testicles. Stewie follows Bertram to discover his master plan and foil it. It turns out Bertram is not there, but Stewie finds a book and finds out his real lair's location. Stewie goes there and destroys his tech including cloning machines and gets to his location. But Bertram took Stewie's teddy bear Rupert and placed him in a glass dome on his giant satellite. Stewie destroys the satellite with Bertram's mind control machine, then rescues Rupert. Bertram and Stewie fight in the park were Stewie kills Bertram's clones and beats Bertram. Bertram, before Stewie kills him, reveals he stole Stewie's shrinking machine and reverses its use to turn himself into a giant. Stewie beats Bertram again (despite Bertram's new powers) by shooting him in the head and destroying the device on Bertram,s laser gun therefore turning him back to normal size. After their fight Stewie considers killing Bertram, but Bertram shouts to his mother who takes him away. In the end, he gives Stewie the finger.
[edit] Trivia
- In Sibling Rivalry, Stewie refers to his brother as Bertram, even though they last met when he was a nameless sperm.
- Although Bertram was conceived in this episode, it appears as though Stewie and Bertram are the same age and height.
- In the Family Guy video game, his lesbian couple parents are mentioned by Stewie.
